The runanga naming komiti at Te Taumutu Marae thought long and hard about what name to bestow upon us. The story that sits behind our name is that earlier, our Springston area was called Makonui. There is also a strong link to the Makomako tree, or Wineberry tree.
The Makomako is a quick growing tree that colonises slips and other open sites in moist forest following natural tree fall, storm damage or forest clearance. It is found throughout the country in lowland to mountain forest.
Therefore, this tree symbolises versatility, the ability to adapt to any condition and flourish in multiple settings. This then links to the learners in the school- versatility, adaptability, can flourish in any setting.
