Otago University offer many great courses and papers in their Theology Programme in 2025, both on-campus and through their distance learning programme.

There are a lot of excellent options:  something for everyone!

Theology papers

They offer a comprehensive selection of papers in Biblical Languages, Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and History, and Pastoral Studies/Ministry. These papers provide foundational understanding, explore Scripture and theology in depth, and address contemporary life and ministry issues.

Here’s the paper titles, as a taster: 

Biblical studies: Interpreting the Old Testament; Interpreting the New Testament; The Book of Job; Judaism in the Time of Jesus; Mātauranga Māori and the Bible; The Gospels; The Pauline Epistles.

Biblical languages: Introductory New Testament Greek 1, 2; Greek Exegesis; Introductory Biblical Hebrew 1, 2; Hebrew Exegesis. 

Christian Thought and History: Doing Theology; The History of Christianity; God and Ethics in the Modern World; Moana Pasifika Theology; The Trinity; The Roots of Public Theology; Reconciliation, Christian Ethics and Public Theology; Theology and the Environment; Theology and Human Well-being; Christianity, War and Violence; Māori Theology and Religion; Theology and Science (pre-Christmas summer school).

Pastoral Studies/Ministry: Trauma-Informed Ministry (block course); Christian Witness in a Secular World; Chaplaincy in Diverse Contexts; Christian Theology and the Arts; Cultures, Migration and Faith; Pastoral Theology: Moana-Pacific Perspectives; Theological Perspectives on Leadership

You can study toward a qualification, or you can take a single paper (or more) for interest, or as part of another degree.

They offer the Diploma in Theology, the Bachelor of Theology degree, as well as Postgraduate degrees in Theology, Ministry, Chaplaincy, and Faith-Based Leadership & Management, the MTheol and PhD.

If you've already got another degree, they offer a Diploma for Graduates, which is 7 papers, 4 at 300-level. This is the equivalent of one full year’s study of Theology, but can be split up across several years.
