Two Day Employment Seminar for Migrants

Olive Lawson —

On May 29 and June 12 St Barnabas is hosting a Christchurch-wide free Employment Seminar for Migrants. This initiative is funded by a Covid-19 Resilience grant that was awarded to St Barnabas

St Barnabas is blessed with numerous talented people who are gifting their skills and talents to this event. Two employment lawyers will be informing migrants about their rights, a Career Consultant will instruct on a “best practice” CV presentation, an IT specialist will talk about employment in the IT sector, and a retired chartered accountant will provide advice for those wishing to run a small business. Other speakers and organisations outside St Barnabas are: “Dress for Success” who provide women with suitable clothing for job interviews, Volunteer Canterbury who will advise on suitable volunteering jobs that can lead to employment, and a visa specialist who will talk about the complex situations with work, family, visitor and other visas.

Finding appropriate employment in a country when English is not your first language, in a work culture with which you are not familiar, is challenging. Many migrants are currently employed in jobs far below their skills and qualifications. It is hoped this seminar will give attendees, as they pursue the daunting task of job seeking, more confidence and knowledge about working in Aotearoa New Zealand.  If you know of anyone that would be interested, they can book here  or contact Olive on 0210 676 587
