Film Review: “The Father”

Justine Tremewan —

Anthony Hopkins just won best actor for his role in The Father at the Oscars, at the age of 83. Justine Tremewan tells us what she thought of the movie.

Florian Zeller adapted his prize winning 2012 French play, with the help of Christopher Hampton, to create “The Father”. This film is about an aging male Londoner with dementia and his daughter who cares for him, during his declining years. Anthony Hopkins masterfully plays the part of Anthony who displays some of the more obvious signs and symptoms of this neurological disease. Olivia Colman takes on the role of Anne, Anthony’s emotionally attached and yet stoically caring daughter. Some have said that this is a scary and confronting movie which draws the viewer into the confused state of mind of the main character. However, I found it to be a sobering and yet heart-warming portrayal of some of the family dynamics associated with this progressive disease. Whether you choose to see this film or not will depend on many factors known only to you. However, if you wish to view the Sony Pictures Official Trailer, please click on the link below:
