Faith and Music Part 2: The nostalgia of hymns - Feb 13

Tania Wright —

This Sunday evening at 5pm is the AAW Hymns of Praise where members will share their favourite hymns and how they have impacted their lives. June McCormick, Madeleine Price, and Barbara Stanford share their favourite hymns and why.

June McCormick: The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended

This is a very special hymn for me as I always associate it with growing up in the country and the church I went to. I feel it is a very peaceful hymn. It has a very gentle but catchy tune.

Madeleine Price: Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

This wonderful hymn of praise and celebration can be used for so many different occasions – and for any time of the day. It is a calming and reflective hymn, in some ways like a prayer and can be sung by a simple church congregation or in a cathedral led by a choir. The tune instantly comes to mind and is easy to sing without music to accompany it. It really is a ‘feel good’ hymn and I love the melody/tune. It is not too long, and the verses are all encapsulating. I like that it focuses on the blessed Trinity.

Barbara Stanford: Morning has Broken

This always reminds me of God, blackbirds and growing up in Dorset. We had fig trees at home and blackbirds often used to fight over the figs - often eating all of them before we got a chance! I have fond memories of the local church – especially of the daffodils on the church bank – and - the congregation became a family - just like St Barnabas.

For more hymns and inspiring stories, come to the AAW Hymns of Praise, 13 February, 5pm, together with the St Barnabas Choir. We look forward to seeing you there!
