An update from Drs Nick & Tessa Laing in Uganda

Andy Dickson —

Last year at St Barnabas we fundraised to help the One Day Health team, co-founded by Dr Nick and Tess Laing, to start more clinics in Uganda. Here is an update from Nick:

One Day, everyone in Sub-Saharan Africa will access quality healthcare. Each day, OneDay Health brings this dream closer to reality.

In 2023, we treated our 200,000th patient, a momentous achievement for our team and supporters. We are proud of the quality care our nurses gave each of these patients and their transformative impact in remote communities. I encourage you to watch this fantastic video where Co-Founder Emmanuel Ochola and our communities share their heartwarming experiences of how OneDay Health transforms their health, wellbeing and financial situation.

"They work with all their heart”

Our 2023 phone survey illustrated the value OneDay Health brings our communities. As much as our headline numbers such as “patients treated” and “money saved” illustrate our impact, there’s something special about hearing first hand from our communities. Our patients shared how they felt about our services, and gave us more insight into how people access their health centers.

  • 95% of patients would recommend their OneDay Health Center to a friend or relative

  • 96% of people were satisfied or very satisfied with their Health center

  • 95% Rated OneDay Health as either fairly priced or underpriced

Over half our patients walk to the health center.

"Before getting treatment from OneDay health center I was not able to work - not even in the garden, but now I can work so well."

In October last year OneDay Health was selected for the second cohort of the London School of Economics 100x Impact Accelerator. We’re proud to be selected as a potential “social unicorn” - an enterprise which could bring “100x the impact” through improving the lives of millions of people. We're already soaking up the mentorship from leaders of inspiring organisations such as MiracleFeet, connections with our fellow cohort enterprises and the biggest single grant we’ve received yet.

2024 - To the East, West and South to Malawi!

Even as I write this in 2024, our new hub in Kumi, Eastern Uganda, launches its first health center in “Kacherede”, which has already treated over 500 patients. The second health center in Kumi will be placed on a small island surrounded by a swampy lake, which has extremely poor health access. The Island’s population of 3000 people is on the lower end of the areas we serve. However, given the extreme difficulty the islanders have accessing healthcare, we feel compelled to give it our best shot and provide quality healthcare to the island for the first time.

For the first time we’re expanding to Western Uganda, with rolling hills and cooler climates. We’ve identified many healthcare black holes in the Hoima region bordering Lake Albert, and we're excited to see the impact of our OneDay Health centers there. Odur Paul who previously managed Boke OneDay Health center in Lira is the new Hoima Hub Manager. for the first time, he won't know the language in the area where he works – but he’s keen to learn Bunyoro.

And finally, there’s Malawi. After a promising scoping visit, there may be an opportunity to explore whether our OneDay Health model can work providing healthcare in another country. We’re exploring a range of models, including operating out of community built “health posts” which the government hasn’t yet managed to staff.
