3rd XV vs CBHS "Brumbies" won 19-12

The boys first met the CBHS Brumbies in the early grading matches, who were then able to put 15 or 20 points on Bede's to win. In yesterday's encounter, Bede's were first to score and looked competitive. But thereon played the rest of the first half on defence in their own 22. Remarkably they kept CBHS from scoring.

The second half was much more expansive. Bede's were the attackers. Territory came with the kick and chase. Harry Friend found a gap and made a scything 30m run to score. Sam Keno ran a nice line at pace and scored his second of the match.

It was looking as if Bede's might keep CBHS scoreless at 19-0 with less than 10 minutes to go. How quickly it can change. A complacent moment and CBHS scored easily under the posts. Minutes later CBHS were awarded a penalty try. It got a little tense and urgent calls to kick the ball into touch on the the ref's fulltime advice put an end to the late surge. The Bede's boys were humbly pleased with themselves and returned to the sideline to dry gear bags courtesy of the ongoing tarpaulin attendances of their manager Jen Rodgers.

U75kgs derby game played on Thursday (won 26-14 by Red)

U65kgs vs CBHS U65kgs drew 17-17

A try by CBHS from the kick off, and the persistent rain meant the men were going to have a tough game on their hands. To their credit the Bede's men were unfazed and hit back soon after with a fantastic try of their own.

However, the first half penalty count was against Bede's as they continued to concede at the breakdown. The men soon realised they had to change their game plan as the referee wasn’t going to change his. This showed a real maturity in the team.

What also impressed today was the way the team has self belief and want each other to do well. Their captain, Joey Pawson, led the men from the front, by directing play and encouraging the team.

The score continued to seesaw with tries by both teams, however, in the dying minutes St Bede's was still behind on the scoreboard.

While the team was behind on the scoreboard and time was against them, the men kept their composure, the forwards muscled up and because of their tenacity they crossed the line by the corner posts, to the cheer of the sideline. Resulting in the final score being a 17-all draw.

A sausage and a can of fizz after the game was warmly welcomed as players and spectators soon escaped to their cars to get warm.

A big thank you to Katrina who took the score whilst shivering on the side line, the head chefs (Newsomes) and the Bede’s touch judge who ran the touch line with precision.

U15 Red vs CBHS U15 "A" lost 14-24

This week we had been training hard and gearing up well for this game against CBHS. With only just over a month ago losing to them by over 80 points preseason we knew it would be a challenge. But we also had some confidence knowing that our team had developed significantly since our first game together.

CBHS scored early in the game with kicking deep into our defensive zone and with the ball bouncing awkwardly, not being caught on the full allowed them an easy try. They went on to score again shortly after and then we rallied together putting in some very good phases, with the forwards being dominant in close play allowing us to score a good try just before halftime. This gave us some good confidence and belief going into the second spell.

The second half we grew another foot taller and were the better team. But unfortunately, with a couple of opportunities going astray and from an unlucky bounce of the ball, CBHS were able to take the game away from us. We were only behind by a few points, until the last minutes where they scored a good try and kicked a long-range goal to finish the game. Our boys should be very proud of their effort and now should develop more belief going into our next games of the season. We will get another chance.

Every week we give out an award for the player displaying different strengths of character on the pitch. Last week Noah received the award for the courage he had shown and this week it was shared with two players; Taniela Talanoa and Heinrich Muller for showing great passion and determination by having a never give up attitude! A special mention to Lejorben Lutters for organizing our team’s sausage sizzle fundraiser and all the parents and boys who helped on the day! Thank you.

U15 "Black" vs Cashmere HS U15 won 19-15

The lads came away with a good win in tough conditions. They had a strong first half with plenty of possession and flowing backline moves, but small errors prevented them from scoring more that one try.
In the second half CHS came into the game more with increased possession. They scored 3 unconverted tries, including one to take the lead with 5 minutes to go. However SBC showed great self belief and composure - down to 13 men - to camp on the CHS line and score the winning try in the last play of the game. During the game SBC were excellent in their goal-line defence, and their scrums and lineouts. They were also on the wrong end of the penalty count.

Tries: Connor J 2, Finn O 1
Conversions: Max 1, Tommy G 1
Forward of the day: Dan P
Back of the day: Joey K
Player of the day: Connor J

U14 "Black" vs Cashmere HS U14 won 22-15

U14 Black started well against Cashmere. The first 10 minutes had good structure with the forwards creating go forward with some strong carries before going wide to the backs. This led to an early try with Josh Bain crashing over. Another set of good phase play led to an overlap out wide and some crisp passing saw Danny Boyce scoring out wide. After that both teams struggled to maintain momentum as the rain started with the odd spilled pass or turnover in contact. Some good breaks by our forwards looked promising but our support was often late arriving leading to too many turnovers. Cashmere bounced back with two late tries in the half despite us putting some good pressure on them when they had the ball in hand.

In the second half we were able to maintain possession consistently and eventually found enough space out wide for Danny to cross over for two more tries. Discipline became an issue as both sides were penalised heavily. Cashmere scored a late try but we were able to close out the game by staying in the right part of the field. Good to get a win but still know that we can get better with some work at training. Thanks to all sideline support and big thanks to Aidan, Will and Bram for the work they’ve done in getting the improvements in our game. Forward of the Day was Max Morris for being a constant menace with the ball in hand around the ruck fringes and Back of the Day was Danny for his strong finishing out wide.

U14 "White" vs SBHS U14 "B" lost 7-29

A tough day at the office for the boys today. After the high of last week the boys tried to get off to a good start. The Shirley team were up for this game and didn’t let up on the pressure putting four tries on us in the first half. The boys kept their heads up and a well fought try from Kody and the conversion from Nikolas in the second half kept us in the game. Shirley were not going to let this one go and continued to heap on the pressure. The score line did not reflect the effort from the boys. Credit to Kody Ballagh who received the player of the day blazer and Lachlan Claridge our tackler of the day.

U55kgs vs Christ's College U55kgs won 17-10

That’s more like it from the U55kgs team!!! After a week of quality training the boys turned up today ready to play.

We knew that we needed to be on our game today, as Christ’s College were coming off a draw the previous week against the competition leaders. We were also defending the Metro Shield.

Prior to the game we talked about the need for accurate passing, straight, hard running and dominance at the breakdown, especially with the adverse weather conditions. The skill on display from both teams was nothing short of outstanding with some quality passing, backline moves and tactical kicking. Two good tries in the first half to Jake O’Sullivan and Patsy Fowler saw Bede's going into the break ahead by 10-7.The second spell saw more of the same from both teams, Jimmy Ferguson made an outstanding break which ended in him scoring our third try which was converted and this took the lead out to 17-7 with only minutes to play. Christ’s never gave up and scored in the last play of the game. Tackler of the day went to Mac Templeton, for his bone crunching display of tackling and work around the park. Player of the day went to Joseph Whalley for his tactical play, controlling the game from first five. Final score, St Bede'as 17 Christ’s College 12. Once again, thanks to the great support from the sidelines.
