Kelvin Fisher —

A busy week for the Senior side, which started off with the conclusion of the Top 4 round robin going up against Christ's College. Having pushed this highly vaunted team in the opening Thomson Trophy game of the season the team was looking to improve on this showing and possibly cause an upset.

The team played exceptionally well and stayed with the Christ's lineup for much of the game but couldn’t wrest the advantage from them and eventually went down 89-98.

This week saw quarter finals underway and St Bede's found themselves pitted against neighbors Shirley Boys' High. A large crowd gathered at Bede's and were treated to a tight, exciting battle.

Shirley made the early running and took a handy lead in the opening quarter as St Bede’s nerves were evident. Despite this St Bede’s stayed within reach throughout the first half and went into halftime trailing by just 2 points.

A see sawing second stanza unfolded and just when Shirley appeared to be gaining some ascendency, a breakaway dunk from Ashton Walls spurred the home team and crowd on and St Bede’s clawed back the deficit. Numerous lead changes happened during the second half but as the full-time siren sounded the teams were locked up and heading for overtime.

The excitement continued during the extra minutes with the respective supporters urging their team on. St Bede's gained a 6-point lead heading into the final 2 minutes but some sharp outside shooting from Shirley kept them in touch. A Thomas Martin 3 pointer and then a 2 pointer from him, followed by an outstanding put back from Walls with seconds left on the clock put Bede's up by 2 points. A tactical timeout from Shirley saw them draw up a play with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock and despite excellent defence got a good look at the hoop only for it to roll out and St Bede's secure the rebound and victory.

Next Tuesday at Middleton Grange sees the side go up against Christ's College for a spot in the Thomson trophy final. The lads would love your support as they pursue this goal. Let’s pack the gym!!

The same lineup has also locked in a semifinal in the U20 club competition with this scheduled for Saturday 20 August following tomorrow’s final game of round robin play.

Last night’s game also marked the final home game for our Yr 13 boys and whilst there is plenty of basketball to be played this season we would like to acknowledge these lads and their contribution to St Bede's basketball during their years at the college.

James Leen, Ashton Walls, Hunter Cutbush, Jacko Siave, Hamish Patrick, Corban Fisher, Felix Falconer, Connor Fyall.

Also over the past couple of weeks several players have been awarded caps and congratulations on this achievement to Agar Torres, Hamish Patrick, Corban Fisher, Thomas Martin, Cooper Siave, Troy Cutbush & Felix Falconer.

A very special feature of this was Cooper Siave & Troy Cutbush receiving their caps from their previously capped older brothers, Jackson Siave & Hunter Cutbush.

U17 Red

A nervous start to game which saw the boys trailing behind from the start. Riccarton’s game and shooting were on point with the St Bede's boys not being to be able to settle down and find their game. The game ended with a loss to the home team. 72/81 final result. Despite not advancing in the playoffs the team can be very proud of their season having been through the regular season unbeaten and putting out good performances on a regular basis. The team will be looking to finish the season strongly tomorrow in their last game against Christchurch Boys' High.

Tomorrow is the final game for all of our club sides apart from the Senior side and we wish everyone the best for their last game. Players please take a change of clothes so that your team manager can collect uniforms after your match.

On Sunday 25 September the club will hold an End of Season celebration at 4pm in the PAC with this event preceded by an Alumni game featuring some former Bedeans up against our current crop of players in what should be a fun, exciting encounter.
