Become a Homestay Family

Kelly Watson —

Every year, international students choose St Bede’s for the quality of education, strong values, and sense of community.

What makes their experience truly special, though, is the families who welcome them in. We are currently looking for new homestay families to support our international programme.

Why Host?

For many students, this is their first time living away from home. A good homestay provides stability, routine, and a sense of belonging. You are not just offering a bed and meals. You are providing a home base while they navigate a new country, school, and culture.

Hosting can be incredibly rewarding. Families often say they gain:

  • A broader understanding of other cultures

  • Lifelong international connections

  • A fresh perspective on their own routines and traditions

And yes, it can be a lot of fun. Expect interesting dinner conversations!

What’s Involved?

Homestay families are expected to:

  • Provide a safe, comfortable bedroom and study space

  • Include the student in family life

  • Provide breakfast, lunch and dinner each day

  • Support school attendance and routines

  • Offer guidance as they adjust to life in New Zealand

All homestays are vetted, and our International Department provides ongoing support. You are not left to figure it out on your own.

Financial Support

Host families receive $365 per week.

This is intended to cover:

  • Meals

  • Power and water

  • Transport support where needed

  • General day-to-day living costs

It is not designed to be income, but it does ensure families are not out of pocket for opening their home.
