28 May Rugby Match Reports

Mark Ealey —

Including two derby matches

1st XV vs St. Andrew's College won 22-19

Our 1st XV played St. Andrew’s College for the Earl-Wyllie Trophy on Saturday. Most older rugby followers will recognise the names of these old boy All Blacks from each school. The first half was hard fought with both teams probing for weakness. The half time score was 13-8 to STAC.

As the game progressed, our team gained a degree of dominance. We demonstrated an ability to defend our line under serious pressure but also an ability to make territorial progress when the opportunity presents itself.

STAC were leading at the very end of the game but in the last few seconds Christian Ioane crashed over for us to win the game: 22-19. It was a very close run thing with our winning score being achieved well into injury time.

Our forward coaches were happy with our set piece dominance but there is still, as always, room for improvement.

It would be fair to say that our 1st XV has yet to produce a complete performance this season. When they do, in this person’s opinion, they will be difficult for any team to defeat.

1st XV MVP system: 1 point Riley Lucas. 2 points George Gunn. 3 points Christian Ioane.

The Davidson, Flood, Litten Origin Award Committee was in agreement and awarded Origin badges to Christian Ioane and George Gunn

Halftime: 7 – 13 STAC in the lead. Full time: 22 – 19 Win to SBC

Tries: Christian Ioane 2, Jamayne Feast 1. Conversions: Ben Trillo 2. Penalty: Ben Trillo 1.

U75kgs Red vs CBHS Black won 29-12

After a loss and a bye weekend, the U75kg Red team were looking to get their season back on track against CBHS. On a fantastic late autumn day the team prepared well and looked good in the warmup. Unfortunately none of this seemed to carry over into an error strewn first half performance, where poor execution and inaccuracy led to a scrappy affair. The highlight for Bede’s was Max Hammett picking a great line off Tommy Gunn’s shoulder to cut through and score a converted try to take the early lead. Later in the half indiscipline near the halfway line ended up with Bede’s being marched back 20 meters and Boys’ High scoring under the posts. The half-time score was 7-7.

In the second half with some changes bringing fresh impetus, the team started playing with better structure and much improved defence. Some patience in attack meant St Bede’s put together some phases and Fraser Brown scored a well worked try in the corner. Soon after Max Hammett showed great pace to score a solo try from his own half. This gave the team a 19-7 lead. St Bede’s were playing with much more confidence in both attack and defence and a good partnership in the line-out between Elijah Butts and Ollie Meates giving the team a great platform to attack from. A good break and strong running by Harvey Scott resulted in Fraser Brown going over for his second try. More indiscipline gifted Boys’ High another try but the team finished the game well when a well weighted chip through was finished by Fraser Brown to complete his hat trick.

The team began to click in the second half and hopefully with some good work at training they can take that form into their next fixture.

U15 Black vs Cashmere U15 lost 5-67

U15 Red vs StAC U15 "A" won 57-10

Our third encounter with STAC this season was always going to be interesting with many players from both sides being unavailable through injury or illness. This seems to be a feature of the early part of the season for all grades and will hopefully settle down as we get into winter. The boys started well with LaDanian Davis (LT) making a clean break to open the score in the first minute. STAC responded with a try of their own and it showed the boys would have to contain their strong centre pairing on defence. The next ten minutes were spent testing each other before Max Kirk showed a clean pair of heels to get a long distance try. The rest of the half saw good defence forcing STAC into mistakes and some key jackal turnovers particularly by Kelby Smith. Our discipline was much better than last week with very few high tackle penalties or ‘free kicks’. With ball in hand in our own half Reuben McIntyre was able to exploit space with his kicking game. Good kick chases, particularly from Carter Pearson, lead to field position from which we were able to score several well-constructed tries saw a halftime lead of 38 – 5.

Second half saw much the same although STAC’s defence was stiffer with some key covering tackles. Features were LT’s draw and passing to put Jonty Fryer into space on the left flank and Kymani Hau-Taunoa Charlie Applegarth and Tyler Ikin’s work rate up front. With the final score 57-10 the boys are proud of their effort and step up from last week’s game against Christ’s whilst at the same time knowing there’s plenty of work to do for some tough upcoming games. Well done! Big thanks to Jimmy Ferguson and Jamie Warren-Thompson for helping us out.

U14 Davidson vs Merivale Papanui won 39-38

On Saturday U14 Davidson took on Merivale Papanui at Nunweek park. The boys had challenges before the game, starting with only 13 available to play but they entered the match with a full head of steam. The boys went up 3 tries to one but Merivale Papanui brought it back to 19-17 at half time. The 2 man advantage started to prevail as Merivale Papanui were up 38-19. Against all odds the boys rolled up the sleeves and the boys showed some great Bedean ticker and brought the score back to 38-34. With the last play called and a scrum inside our own 22 the boys got the ball down the field and scored on the last play of the game and sealed the victory 39-38. The boys really dug deep and should be proud of their efforts today. Showing great ticker from being down 2 men and on the scoreboard, the boys should be proud of their efforts and this win should be seen as a highlight of the season so far.

U14 Freeman vs U14 Dunne won by Freeman 55-32

U14 Dunne vs U14 Freeman was always going to be a good match with all the new friends getting the chance to run hard at each other. The match got off to a quick start with Freeman running hard and straight to score back to back tries in the first 20 minutes. Dunne then rallied just after the 20 min mark for Bede Irving to cross the line.Followed by back to back tries to Kaden Roberts and Lui Vaipulu to close out the first half.Freeman came out into the second half with good direct running again and good movement of the ball. Dunne never lost heart and fought well through to the final minutes where after tough defence on their own line managed a well constructed team try scored by Will O'Donnell. Final score 32 to 55 to a good Freeman side whom we look forward to playing again later in the season. Bedeans of the week go to Bede Irving for a great game and stepping up his defensive work with quick recycle to tackle again. Hunter Mathers also receives a Bedean award for stepping up and coming across from Freeman to play a strong game with some good hit-ups and all with a smile. (Dunne-side)

U55kgs vs Christ's College U55kgs lost 5-26

Today the boys played against Christ's College on a frosty morning down at the Christ's College Cricket Ground. The boys were raring to play after a bye the previous week. College got off to a good start scoring under the sticks twice in the first 15 minutes however the boys didn’t let their heads drop and scored a try of their own early in the second half by Max Boyle. To finish the game Christ's scored two late tries to push their lead out to 26-5. Credit to the boys for sticking at it, as they showed plenty of Bedean ticker and mana on their try line to prevent Christ from scoring more points. Special mention to Fergus Hanrahan for making some critical try saving tackles. Joe Norton got our man of the match performance for nailing his lineouts and looking busy around the ground. Just like to say a quick thank you to Aileen and Stephen who make our job very easy as coaches and to our sponsors for sponsoring us for this year.  Ben O’Donovan
