Why the mining and quarrying industry?

  • The industry is constantly growing, meaning job opportunities are plentiful – it’s hugely important to New Zealand, contributing $3.1 billion to our GDP
  • Earning potential is high – the average earnings in the industry are approximately $100,000 per annum!
  • There are a variety of qualification pathways, starting at school with RockUp® through to nationally-recognised qualifications for equipment operators, technicians, and managers.

Why RockUp®?

  • There are employers across many parts of Aotearoa that have pledged to host a secondary school student in MITO’s RockUp® micro-credential
  • There is the potential for the students to transition straight into full-time employment upon leaving school
  • RockUp® will give your students an immersive experience in the industry, the opportunity to explore potential career pathways, and a nationally-recognised micro-credential to add to their CV.

UC offers first internationally accredited BSc Biology major

The University of Canterbury is offering the first Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree biological sciences major in Australasia to be internationally accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB).

The RSB, based in London, United Kingdom, recently made the decision after assessing the UC programme and meeting with the teaching team.

Accreditation establishes a profile of key skills that bioscience employers can recognise in graduates from accredited degrees and students can provide tangible examples of their skills – giving them enhanced competitiveness in global job markets.

Graduates from RSB-accredited programmes are entitled to a free year of membership to the Society. This gives them access to a significant network of bioscience professionals, making it easier to stay up to date with biology-related developments and provides graduates with additional international recognition of their skills and experiences.

Students bring with them a wealth of linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills that will be of immense value to any business looking to expand overseas,” said UC Business School Executive Dean Paul Ballantine.

The Micro-Internship programme was announced at the launch of an Asia New Zealand Foundation report, Te Waipounamu and Asia: South Island Business Connections with Asia Now and in the Future in Christchurch this week.
