Hello from the Careers Corner,

We are excited to announce the ‘My Future Self Day’, a highlight of the Careers' Calendar which is being held, this Thursday the 5 August at St Bede's College. This is where the Year 13 students will have a day focusing on their ‘Future Self’. With the support of the Old Boys' Association we are able to have the professionals from Zestpeople attend and present 3 sessions based around employments skills, networking and personality typing in relation to career choice

We have also reached out to the community and have 26 career professionals, volunteering their time in the afternoon, to take part in a Career Speed Dating Event, where students can discuss specific career choices and opportunities, with these experts in their fields.

A couple of dates to be aware of include - Applications for the Hall of Residence open on Sunday 1 August. If you are looking for accommodation, you need to research your 1st 3 options and apply.

Otago Universities Entrance Scholarships close on the Sunday15 August.

The Tradie SpeedMeeting event is to be held on Thursday 19 August. This is where employers and providers will meet students, who are interested in working in the trades. Any Year 12 or 13 students interested in this need to register with Mr Hall.

ARA also have a number of events coming up in the future as you will see in the post below.

If our community have any work opportunities coming up for our students, then please contact the careers team, as we have a number of students interested in employment at the end of the year.

St Bedes – Year 13 - My Future Self Day

The “My Future Self Day”, is kindly sponsored by the Old Boys Association and to be held on Thursday 5 of August.

This is an exciting day for the Year 13 cohort as they negotiate their transition out of school.

We have been lucky enough secure Cameron McIntyre an Old Boy of the school, and ex Crusader as a guest speaker.

The Career professions from Zestpeople are facilitating 3 morning session which include:

  • Session One – ‘Uncovering occupational interests’ -
  • Session Two - ‘Put Your Best Foot Forward’… which includes 3 workshops
    • 1. Professional brand & networking
    • 2. Interview preparation and presentation
    • 3. Personality Profiles within careers
  • Session Three – ‘Industry interviewing for 2021’
  • The afternoon programme is designed to broaden the students’ understanding of a wide range of opportunities within different pathways. Fields/areas that will be represented on the day include:
      • Defence Force
      • Building and Construction
      • Mechanical Engineering
      • Law
      • Police
      • Engineering
      • Medical Science\Research
      • Medicine - Doctors
      • Commerce/Finance

Morning tea will be supplied but the boys will need to bring their own lunch. 

We expect all Year 13 students to attend for the full day, which will start at the earlier time of 8.25am in the PAC.

As you may be aware, the next round of applications for entrance scholarships for students starting tertiary study at the University in 2022 opened on 1 July  and are due by midnight Sunday 15 August.

Business & Digital Technologies Information Evening

A perfect event for any senior students interested in tech or business.

Business and Digital Technologies at Ara is holding an information evening on August 12, 5:30pm – 7:00pm. This is a fantastic evening for any senior students considering further study in tech or business.

Pacific Students - POPO Foundation Programme Scholarship 2022 close on 15 August 2021.

Foundation Year is perfect for students who are worried about homesickness in their first year of University, for students who have not taken all 3 Sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) in NCEA and for students who want to be on the front foot as they head into Health Sciences First Year.

The POPO Foundation Programme is for Pacific students intending on studying Health Sciences at University. Foundation Year offers a university entrance qualification recognised by all New Zealand universities and the qualification prepares students academically for their first year of study.

- A guaranteed place in a University of Otago Residential College

- A subsidy towards the accommodation fees at a University of Otago Residential College

- Private tutorials for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths

- A dedicated, full-time Programme Coordinator

- Progress and attendance monitored to keep students on track

- Mentoring with senior students to aid in adjusting to life at Otago

Term 3 is when some of Ara’s specialist degree programs have application closing dates. All of these programs have ‘Additional Requirements’ forms learners must submit as part of their applications, which can take more time than a standard application form.

Here’s your opportunity to join our successful aquatics team who are passionate about Christchurch residents getting more active, more often.

Important information regarding the process:

  • Should you be successful at progressing, you will be required to take our swim test and interview from 11 to 13 August 2021
  • If successful through the interview process you will be required to undertake two full days of lifeguard training followed by a lifeguard assessment to gain your formal Pool Lifeguard Qualification before you start your role. This will be provided to you by the Christchurch City Council. The course will be held on 6 to 7 September with the assessment day on 14 September.
  • Before the Lifeguard training assessment date you will need a Comprehensive First Aid Certificate
