My Future Self for Year 13

Mr Jon McDowall —

Year 13 “My Future Self” Career Exploration Programme – Wednesday 25 March 2019

Year 13 “My Future Self” Career Exploration Programme – Wednesday 25th March, 2019

Following on from an initiative by the St Bede's Old Boys' Association (OBA) in 2016, previous Year 13 students have benefited from the OBA sponsoring a tailored career exploration programme delivered by Zestpeople, a local Career Consultancy business associated with the College.

St Bede’s College is pleased to have the continued support of the OBA, in particular with their positive response to extending the programme to include Year 12 students in 2019. This is based on the feedback from previous Year 13 students who expressed how valuable this support would have been in their Year 12, to assist them in subject choices for their final year at school and discovering the many career pathways to explore.

This year, the format has changed with the sessions being delivered off site at the McFaddens Centre and we encourage the Year 13 boys to attend the first upcoming Careers' Focussed Day. The boys will learn more about themselves and gather further understanding about what “Spins their Wheels” and the day will encourage them to take responsibility to further explore their exciting careers and options beyond school.

In 2019 there will be two Careers' Exploration Days allocated for the Year 13 students and two for the Year 12 students. Zestpeople will be facilitating the morning sessions with the St Bede’s Careers Team of Bill Hooper and Bill Hall co-ordinating a range of speakers to present the afternoon segments.

The first date for Year 13 is this Wednesday 27 March, at the McFaddens Centre within the Baptist Church on McFaddens Road. Morning tea will be provided, however students will need to bring their own lunch.

Zestpeople will be offering a range of interactive components within the morning sessions to include:

  • Introduce value of self-awareness in supporting career related decision making and encourage a proactive approach in determining future options.
  • Personality assessment activity using introduction to Myers Briggs Type Indicator
  • Discover personal preferences for where you get your energy from, how you take in information; the way you make decisions around that information and how you approach your commitments.
  • Connect preferences to the working world highlighting career clusters, work environments and components of work.
  • Highlight personal attributes using self-selection and peer input according to our Attribute Survey designed for this age group.
  • Discover individual Transferable Skills using industry related checklist and discussion of skill value to the working world and potential links to career opportunities.
  • Translate initial information to begin the CV writing process utilising recommended template.

The boys will have a Zestpeople resource book from the sessions that may assist you as parents to continue with discussions at home around future career options and opportunities.
