Flag raised in honour of Pope Leo XIV

Rachel Pitcaithly —

We gathered on the front field last week to welcome the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, as the new spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.

As the first American-born pope, his appointment marks a historic milestone that resonates deeply with many of us here, especially in schools like ours where faith and culture intertwine.

Deputy head boy Cooper McDowall reflected on Pope Leo's journey from his roots in Chicago to missionary work in Peru and now to the Chair of St Peter, saying that this reminds us that answering God’s call can take many forms.

As students, we are inspired by his courage to serve wherever he was needed, no matter how far from home.

Prefect Noah Love said the new Pope "speaks to the hopes and concerns of our generation - from care for the environment, to standing with migrants and refugees, and affirming the dignity of all people".

He challenges us to bring our faith into action— Fide et Opere - not just in prayer, but in how we treat others, defend what is right, and serve those in need.

In his final reflection, Noah issued the challenge to students to ensure that St Bede's is a place that reflects Pope Leo's mission - inclusion, listening and community.
