International students embrace college life

Karen Staples —

Welcome to Week 3 of Term 1. The past three weeks have been very busy at school for the international students. The students have now confirmed their timetables, participated in swimming sports, been to singing practice, prepared for Opening Mass, and chosen a sport for Term 1. It is great to see so many of our international students signing up for sports and being part of the school community. This level of involvement not only helps our students integrate better into the school culture but also fosters friendships and a sense of belonging.

Sam, Rio, Kazuki, Winston and Shun represented themselves in the annual school swimming sports. Many of our students have never participated or competed in swimming events before, so this experience has been both exciting and challenging for them. It's commendable that these five boys took part, as it shows a willingness to try new activities and engage in the school community.

In ESOL, the students have been familiarising themselves with school routines, and putting into practice various aspects of the English language, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills. It is through immersion in daily school activities and targeted language instruction that the International students in the ESOL program can effectively familiarise themselves with school routines and develop their English language skills.

One highlight so far has been for the international students to learn the St Bede’s haka. Three dedicated Year 11 students - Marco, George and Louis - have spent time during Mana Tāne teaching the students the words and meanings of the school haka. Special attention has been to emphasise the pronunciation and the meaning behind the words to help the students understand the significance of what they are saying.
