Mr Jon McDowall —

Junior Reports, Study Skills, Careers and Subject Choice Evening, Scholarships and University/Tertiary Applications, and Year 13 My Future Self Programme

Junior Reports

Thank you for your patience with the junior reports these have been deployed to the parent portal. Please take the time to read these and discuss these with your son. As outlined at the end of last term, given the timing of this, the Parent Teacher Evenings for Year 9 and 10 students in week two will not be occurring. Should you wish to contact the subject teacher regarding any aspects of the report please do so via email. Staff emails are their first initial and last name followed by @stbedes.school.nz, for example jmcdowall@stbedes.school.nz. The Subject Choice and Careers evening is another opportunity to discuss your child’s learning.

Study Skills

Nicola Leete has been in the College this week working with our Year 12 and 13 students as they prepare for exam week in Week 5. We recommend all Year 11-13 students begin preparing for these today. Exam week is essential preparation for the external examinations that occur at the end of the year.

Careers and Subject Choice Evening

This will be held in the PAC and Marian block on Tuesday August 8 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come in and meet Heads of Faculty, subject teachers and a number of external providers as they plan their future pathway.

Scholarships and University/Tertiary Applications

As we enter the second half of the year our Year 13 students need to begin (if they have not already) completing the necessary documentation if they intend to complete further study at a tertiary provider.

Parents of year 13 students, and the students themselves should have received a letter outlining the process and some key dates including the liaison visits outlined below.

  • Victoria University - 2 August, period 2 in the careers room
  • Otago University - 15 September, period 5 in the careers room
  • Canterbury University- 25 September periods 5 and 6 in the Learning Centre
  • Auckland University, Lincoln and ARA are to yet be finalised. Once it is confirmed we will place this information on the notices and in the school newsletter.

Student allowance and loan information can be accessed at www.studylink.govt.nz.

Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Ms Sullivan for scholarships or Mr Hooper for University including Halls of Residence information in the first instance.

Year 13 My Future Self Programme – Sponsored by the Old Boys Association

The final breakfast and seminar is Thursday, August 10 commencing at 7:50am in the Dining Room for the cooked breakfast and guest speakers. The third seminar from Zestpeople will run periods one, two and three as per the previous sessions. We would love to see all year 13 students at the breakfast. The information and wisdom the Old Boys have been sharing with the students has been excellent.
