The opening round of the Thomson Trophy took place on Tuesday night with a capping ceremony preceding the match with Lochie McLean, Jacko Siave & Hunter Cutbush receiving the honour of a cap for their contribution to basketball at St Bede’s.

On the court it was a challenging opening clash against a much vaunted Christ's College side and with the opening play being a dunk to one of Christ’s stars the sign appeared ominous.

A barrage of 3 pointers extended Christ's early lead however the home side continued taking the game to Christ's, pushing aside reputations to stay within touch during the early stages. Foul trouble for the visitors worked in St Bede’s favour however they were able to fully capitalise on the opportunities at the foul line.

Immediately after halftime, the defensive intensity lifted, causing turnovers and unsettling the Christ's lineup. Converting this pressure into points, St Bede’s went into the final quarter trailing by just 11 points and aiming to erode this lead further.

In a tense final basket, the teams traded baskets with a couple of 3 pointers from Christ's making the job a little more difficult for Bede's. Despite an awesome effort at both ends of the court the lead remained relatively similar and at the final hooter Christ's took the victory 94-80.

The team can take a huge amount of pride and satisfaction in pushing a high quality opponent for the entire duration of the match. This bodes well for upcoming clashes and the boys will be looking to carry this momentum through to next week’s match against Christchurch Boys' High. Game is scheduled for 7.20pm Tuesday 17 May and would be great to get a band of supporters at Boys' High gym.

The basketball club held its Annual General Meeting on Monday 9 May with a relatively small but engaged group of basketball supporters.

For anyone who was unable to make the meeting and would like to be involved and contribute to the growth of basketball in St Bede’s you are more than welcome to join our committee. Please get in contact with any of our elected officers for more details.
