AS Lewis Award -Excellence in Physical Education

The AS Lewis Award recognises excellence in critical analysis on a physical education topic.

The prize is $500 for each award. Entries close 5pm Monday 31 May 2021

Background

A.S (Sam) Lewis was a giant figure in our history. He had a career of firsts: he was the first person to be appointed to a university in a role providing physical recreation to staff and students at the University of Canterbury in 1946. He was the first person to become an Associate of the Physical Education Society (when that status could only be achieved by examination), and the first person to complete the requirements (presentation of a thesis) to become a Fellow of the Society. In his university position Sam published research and advocated for physical education to be an examinable subject in secondary schools, long before 6th Form Certificate and NCEA exams. He also edited the original Bulletin of the Society, the forerunner of the current Journal. Notably, Sam was the first recipient of the Sir Alexander Gillies Medal for, amongst other things, his outstanding management of the Associate and Fellowship qualifications examination process. Sam was innovative, meticulous, strongly principled, humble, and articulate and he established warm, enduring relationships. It was no surprise that he was invited to chair the international committee which organised the conference associated with the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974. He was also sought after as a fitness trainer. He developed the Canter Plan and Target Training, both fitness training regimes characterised by the accumulation of scores against established tables. He was also a leading interpreter of Sheldon’s system of bodily classification, Somatotyping. Sam played a major role in writing examination papers for members to advance their qualifications. In the early days of this award, the essay competition was open to tertiary and secondary students. In 2016 it was narrowed to secondary school students, when the Lady Joan Gillies Award was introduced for undergraduate students

Eligibility

Requirements

  • Draw conclusions by explaining any consequences, need for further thought and or possible action
  • Use relevant research, and appropriate referencing, to support your analysis

Accounting is far from dead

With many questioning the future of work, it is encouraging to see jobs in both professional services and the public sector in high demand.

The top 10 most popular jobs for 2020 released by the Tertiary Education Commission shows that policing, teaching and health sector jobs remain the most-searched-for professions, but real estate agent makes it into the top ten for the first time.

As reported by the NZ Herald last month, most other jobs in the top 10 have also featured in previous lists including nurses, psychologists, teachers and accountants.

For University of Canterbury Business School accounting specialist and senior lecturer, Rob Vosslamber, this is a very encouraging sign and signals that despite the cries of the doomsayers, accounting is far from dead.

“An accounting degree opens doors for a wide range of career options and is an essential skill for any business or not-for-profit activity”, said Vosslamber.

“Back in 2013, Oxford researchers Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne, estimated that 94% of the work done by accountants and auditors would be performed by smart technology in the next two decades. This triggered sensationalised headlines around the world.

“But Accounting is a social science, it deals with people and with human behaviour. The shifts with the introduction of machines and artificial intelligence has automated simple and repetitive tasks, meaning accountants are now able to focus their expertise on the role of creative problem solving,” adds Vosslamber.

In addition, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Occupation Outlook also rates Accountants as in demand with high income potential and the growing need for accountancy services and financial advice.

With student interest high and increasing demand for these services, accounting has a secure future.

How to help your teenager with their career decisions

Never before has a generation had to adapt so quickly. Industries, jobs, and skills are disappearing and evolving all the time and keeping up with the changes can be a very real challenge.

You can help your child face this new way of navigating their career path by helping them to learn to be agile and resilient.

Be their advocate, encourage them and walk alongside them as they work this out. Not only will you help them make wise decisions, but your relationship can also be strengthened when they feel trusted and supported.

Career choices are not for life.

A “job for life” mindset is no longer valid. The idea that a certain qualification will set them on a certain path forever is out of date with what actually happens these days. Certainly, their choices now can affect the options available to them, but it is almost as certain that whatever path they choose now will not be their last.

Widen your support network.

Add friends who your teen trusts, ask people you know in industries your teen has an interest in to talk to them, bring in older and younger contacts to be available to share their experiences with them.

Encourage choosing subjects that are of interest.

Notice what subjects spark your child’s interest and gives them energy – you want them to engage with school, not disengage because they are not inspired by what they are studying. It pays to help them understand the subjects that will be required if they want to follow certain interests into tertiary study, but also to remember that all is not lost if they require further short-term study to gain access later on. The most important thing is that they want to study, and they are interested in what they are learning.

Expand the possibilities they are aware of:

Attend the Career Expo, look online, chat with friends, engage with the school career advisor – make sure you and your child feel empowered with knowledge.

Ask questions, challenge beliefs.

The key is to manage this without criticising them. Clear up any misunderstandings they may have about work so that they are making choices based on accurate information.

Encourage work experience.

The more they are exposed to, the more they will understand if that is right for them or not. Paid or volunteer work develops a positive work ethic and builds confidence and competence.
