Greetings from St Bede's College
It has been a good week. Classes began well and today we had the swimming sports which featured a high level of participation and competition in the pool, and some good natured House rivalry out of the pool. It was a good community day to end the week.
Last weekend the SBC Rowers performed very well at the South Island Club Championships. Details of these performances are outlined in the sports section of the newsletter. On Sunday morning (10 February), the Rowing Team compete in the ‘Head of the River’ races at Kerrs Reach, starting at 9.15am. Any support of our rowing team would be most appreciated by them, given these races are in the city.
Earlier in the week the 1st XI Cricket Team comprehensively won their first traditional of the year against Sacred Heart College in Auckland, competing for the David Mills Trophy. David Mills was a boarder here in the 1930’s who came from Pukekohe. His two sons, Bede and John, followed in the 1960s, and they sent their sons to Sacred Heart. In memory of their father, they set up the fixture which has been going for 10 years. See the sports section of the newsletter where the scores are published.
On Monday, Pope Francis had declared this day in the church as World Day of the Sick, and as Catholics he has asked us to pray and if possible visit the sick. Most families have members who are unwell or have been unwell, so let us support this day as a Catholic Community by keeping those that are sick in our prayers.
At every staff briefing, staff take turns in prayers or reflection. I thought I would share with you this morning’s reflection by our new Food Technology teacher, Ms Bickerstaff…
