Profile: George Warren (2013-2017)
From scientific research into Listeriosis to the pursuit of singer-songwriter success, this old boy exemplifies the spirit of reaching for the stars.
Since leaving St Bede’s in 2017, George Warren has embarked on a remarkable journey that blends his passion for science with his burgeoning talent in music. Last year George completed his Master’s thesis in Microbiology at Otago University. “My master's thesis was on a foodborne illness called Listeriosis, and the mechanisms the causative bacteria - Listeria monocytogenes - use to spread within a host” explains George, who is about to begin working towards his PHD.
For most people, these studies would equal a very full plate, but this old boy is balancing his academic studies alongside cultivating a blossoming music career!
George's foray into song writing and performing began in early 2022 when he started attending the Open Mic night at Inch Bar, a local pub in Dunedin. Initially, George performed covers of renowned artists such as Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, and Billy Joel. His talent quickly caught people’s attention, leading to featured act spots on open mic nights and eventually to full-fledged gigs.
The supportive environment at Inch Bar and the friendships he forged there inspired George to write his first song, "Dark Beer." Reflecting on the warm, communal atmosphere of the pub, he penned this song to celebrate the simple joys of winter evenings spent with good company around a fireplace.
“Dark Beer” was the first song written on his debut EP release “Stargazer” which went live on Spotify and other streaming platforms last month. Following "Dark Beer," George wrote the songs "Stargazer", "Pilgrims", and “Beggar, Borrower, Thief".
"Stargazer" draws inspiration from cherished moments spent with his mother, Penny, stargazing from their home in Kaiapoi. This song captures the tranquillity and thought-provoking nature of observing the night sky. "Pilgrims," on the other hand, is a tribute to the dedicated fans of Newcastle United Football Club. A passionate supporter himself, George appreciates the commitment of fans who travel great distances to watch their team play at St. James Park.
The song "Beggar, Borrower, Thief" was born out of George’s observations of the increasing number of homeless people in Dunedin. This song delves into the complexities of urban living and questions the societal factors contributing to homelessness.
“Going from picking up the guitar in Year 9 music class, the St. Bede's choirs, and the variety concerts to performing in venues and writing/releasing my own music has been an amazing experience. Music has always been a constant throughout my life, and I have St. Bede's College to thank in part for allowing me to keep doing it”, said George.
George's journey into recording and music production began at Turanga Library in Christchurch, where he learned about audio and video production. Armed with an audio interface and other equipment gifted by his family, George finally had the opportunity to apply these skills after submitting his master's thesis in April 2024.
These accomplishments are even more impressive when we learn that George was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. He states that a significant milestone came for him in May this year when Autism NZ, an organization advocating for autistic individuals, featured George as part of their celebration of NZ Music and Comedy Month. This recognition, coupled with support from the Dunedin music community, propelled George to record his music professionally.
Looking ahead, George is considering a postdoctoral fellowship as a potential next step in his academic career, with long-term aspirations of teaching or lecturing at a university. Regardless of where his scientific career takes him, George is committed to staying involved in music.
George Warren’s story from St Bede’s College to the present day exemplifies a blend of dedication, talent, and a passion for both science and the arts. His pursuit of his dreams is an inspiration and we wish him all the very best with his career which we will follow with great interest!
