Sevens Rugby

David Litten —

Last Thursday St Bede’s College competed in the Canterbury Region Condor Sevens Rugby competition. The immediate objective was to make the final as the top two teams gain automatic entry to the National Condor Sevens Competition.

The first game was against St Thomas’. The game was very physical but our boys prevailed 24-12. They also won their second game against Shirley Boys’ 26 – 12. The next game against Christchurch Boys’ proved more challenging. While both teams scored 3 tries, CHBS landed a single conversion to take the win 15 to 17. The final game in pool play was against Timaru who they beat 31-5.

The team had done enough to secure a place in the final. Our opposition was to be the St Thomas team we had beaten earlier. St Thomas played with flair and power and had a 17 to 7 lead at half time. However, second half tries to George Gunn, Jamayne Feast and Maddox Wright saw our boys take the game 26 to 22, thus becoming Canterbury Secondary Schools Sevens Champions.

They will be travelling to Auckland in December to compete in the Condor Sevens National Competition.

The team was very ably coached by Mr Winchester and Mr Patterson.
