Greetings from St Bede’s

Miss Madeleine Castle —

Maori Language week was marked this week, and as our te reo teacher reports:

“It has been a very busy week with lots of fun activities for Māori Language week.

This Year’s theme was Kia ora te reo = Let the language thrive. Teachers and students really embraced this years Māori Language week with lots of te reo Māori being spoken inside and outside of the class.

We held an inter-house competition called Kia-o-rahi ( war game created in Gallipoli for agility, fitness and strength. This competition took place on the Hockey turf and with help of Ara (Christchurch polytechnic) was a fun and successful event.

We closed a successful week by sharing in Hangi. Tino reka frybread was also NAMUNAMUA.

Thanks to all the kaiako, whānau and tauira that supported this week

Aroha nui"

My thanks to Ms Soutar for her coordination of these activities which the community embraced.

Two other cultural events or ceremonies featured this week as well.  Later in the Newsletter Ms Sullivan, our Drama teacher reports on the Year 13 Drama Production, which not only showed off the boys significant acting skills, but was also a thoroughly entertaining 2-hour performance.

Dr Hawkey also coordinated the awarding of the Cultural pockets at Interval this week. The profile of the Arts has gradually become more prominent in the College, and the considerable number of boys who were awarded pockets is testimony to that.

Until next week

Justin
