Navigating the digital world

Diarmuid McMahon —

Netsafe and the Centre of Wellbeing team are holding a free presentation and discussion on the risks, challenges and opportunities of digital technology.

During weeks three and four, our senior students participated in an interactive session focused on online safety. This session was led by Jade McDowall, Head of the Centre of Wellbeing, and Diarmuid McMahon, Deputy Rector for Pastoral and Hauora.

Given that technology plays a significant role in young people's lives, the session aimed to promote a safe and responsible online environment. The session provided information to help students navigate the digital world and encouraged them to think critically about their interactions with technology. Students actively engaged in discussions, asking insightful questions, and had the opportunity to submit anonymous questions through an online forum.

The content covered a range of topics, including the Digital Communications Act and its 10 principles, artificial intelligence, nudes, online scams, sextortion, strategies for staying safe online, and the availability of internal and external support resources.

It was clear and great to see that students are eager to engage in discussions about technology and possess a lot of knowledge about both the benefits and potential pitfalls of their online experiences.

In week eight of this term, the school will continue its online education with students in Years 9 and 10.

On 21 November, the college will host a community education evening featuring Netsafe New Zealand, where they will provide insights on online safety.
