Newest Bedeans welcomed at mihi whakatau

Tracey Ruddenklau —

Entrance Day will remain in the memories of the newest members of the college, who received a warm welcome at the mihi whakatau.

Year 9 parents, caregivers, and whānau gathered in front of the chapel, cameras capturing their sons' first day at high school. There were smiles all around as the Year 13 leaders met the Year 9s and helped make their transition to the college a little smoother.

In the gymnasium, the kapa haka group greeted the Year 9s and their families.

Rector Mr Jon McDowall spoke to the Year 9s about how they are the newest links in the Bedean chain that stretches back generations. Head Boy Simon Curnow told them to be themselves, be proud of who they are, and make the most of every opportunity that is presented to them during their five years at the college.

Matteo Brennan, an old boy of the college (2015-2019), welcomed everyone on behalf of staff, and Bevan Matene came down from New Plymouth to welcome one of our new staff members, Mr Dean Hikaka, who has joined us from New Plymouth Boys' High School.

A powerful haka performance by the Year 13s ended the morning. Now part of the history of St Bede's, we wish the Year 9s well as they settle in to life at the college and leave their own mark on its legacy.
