Wilson leads the way in academic excellence
The St Bede's senior prizegiving, held on Wednesday, 1 November, acknowledged students gaining Excellence and Merit prizes, as well as celebrating students who were first in class and those who received tertiary scholarships
There were also a number of Special Prizes awarded, which recognised the talents and contribution that a variety of senior students made to the college during their time at St Bede’s. The recipients of the Special Prizes for 2023 were:
- Year 11 Board of Honour
Prize: William O'Dea
- Year 12 Board of Honour
Prize: Liam Speechlay
- The MM and JJ Kavanagh Memorial Prize for Oratory: Simon Curnow
- Bishop Hanrahan Memorial Cup - Religious Education Year 12: Samuel Leitch
- Father Gerard Mills Scholarship for a Year 12 student who has contributed to and provided leadership in the cultural life of the college: Heinrich Muller
- The Sir Walter Clifford Cup for Debating: Thomas Richards and Liam Speechlay
- The Sean O'Brien Memorial Trophy for outstanding achievement in an individual sport: Matthew Glen and Samuel Woodgate
- The Instrumental Music Award: Isaac Jones
- The George Fulguirinas Cup for a student who has overcome challenges when faced with adversity: Oliver Lutton
- The PTA award for an
outstanding role model in the Learning Support Department:
Sean Millar - The Vernon Griffiths Award for Singing: Sean Millar
- Sportsman of the Year - The Father Scambary Cup: Finlay Neale
There are also a number of Premier awards. These recognise those students who have distinguished themselves throughout the year
- for their consistent service to the college, their contribution to the special
character of St Bede’s, or their outstanding academic achievement. These young
men are truly being “the best possible version of themselves”.
The recipients of the Premier Prizes for 2023 were:
- The Diligence Gold Medal Year 13: Harrison Buick
- The Brodie Gold medal for Religious Knowledge: Reuben Cawood
- Blue Riband: The Ignatius O'Boyle Cup for the best and most generous use of talent in all aspects of school life: Christian Ioane
- The JC Colin Trophy for Catholic Special Character: Francis Mones-Cazon
- The Carl Sweeney Memorial Trophy for best and most generous use of personal talent: Lorenzo Noa Siaosi
- The Clayton Cosgrove Cup for a student who has committed himself to serving others and, in doing so, leading: Ryan Wilson
- The Cup for Proxime Accessit: Oliver Couch
- Dux of the College: Ryan Wilson
This year's Dux, Ryan Wilson, received Excellence awards in Biology, Religious Education, and Statistics. He was first in subject for Biology and Statistics, completed the University of Canterbury 100 level Calculus course and, at time of writing, has achieved 102 Level 3 excellence credits. He has been leading the way in academic excellence since Year 9.
