Peer Tutoring – A student to student assistance program

Callum Wilson —

As in the past, this year we have a healthy number of senior students who are willing to assist fellow Bedeans in need. It is a fantastic example of our young men fulfilling the College creed – to show our faith by our actions. This assistance is usually of an academic nature, but could absolutely be around other areas such as device use, getting better with certain technologies (e.g., Microsoft Teams), time management strategies, idiosyncrasies of the College etc. In the past demand for these tutors has outstripped supply, but last year some students were never booked. It is a great service that should most certainly be utilised.

The process is straightforward. Either a student, or whanau of a student, decides they would like some advice or assistance with whatever work/assessment/issue they have. They then can “book” a tutor of their choice using this shared document. They add their name, email address, year level, and area of need in the box beside the tutor and wait for the tutor to make contact. Note – the student must keep an eye on their school email as that is how initial contact will be made. The student will organise a time and place that suits with the tutor. After an initial meeting, they can make a plan moving forward. Some students might only require a few meetings, some might setup regular meetings. The important thing is that numbers are exchanged, a new relationship is formed, and the student now has direct access to assistance if and when required.
