Mrs Clare Kissick —

Update for this week.

Cricket

Prize Giving – this will take place on Friday, 1 December in the PAC at St Bede’s College at 6.30pm.  This is a time to acknowledge all players who have played cricket this year.

Water Polo

A huge congratulations to our Junior Water Polo team who had an awesome South Island Junior Tournament, winning all their pool games, the worst game they played they won by 8 goals.

They played Christ College in the final which was very exciting with the first 8 attempts at goal missing and on the 9th attempt the ball went in. Christ College has a very good last quarter but it was too late then as we came away with a 15 to 5 win.

Congratulations to Sam and Paddy O’Neill along with Sam Rockford who made the tournament team and Sam was named player of the Tournament.

A big thank you to the coaches and managers and especially to Pip Stewart for getting the boys organised for the tournament, many thanks to all.

Photo's of the Tournament attached.

Polo

Aston Fitzgerald took part in the inter schools tournament for Polo (horse polo), at the weekend.  Aston was in a combined team, which did very well.

If anyone is interested in taking Polo up, please contact Mrs Kissick in the sports office.

Tennis

School Sport Secondary School Junior Tennis Champs

Several boys competed in the Canterbury Schools Junior Tennis Championship held at Wilding Park on 28 and 29 November. The competition included the top Year 9 and 10 tennis players from schools in the Canterbury region. Charlie Morrison had a fantastic tournament, finishing second in the Year 9 Boys singles competition. The doubles team of Charlie Morrison and Harrison Earl also played well, making it into the Year 9 Boys doubles semi-final.

Athletics New Zealand Secondary School Champs

Nine athletes head to Hastings for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track and Field Champs.

Leading our team is Nick Moulai, winner of last year’s senior boys 3000m title. This year he is focussing only on the 1500m and is looking good for a medal again.

John Gerber 100m and 400m, Nicolo Fronda 100m and 200m and Rupert Naughton 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles are the other senior boys competing. As first year seniors, they will find the competition tough.

Andres Hernandez is looking like our best chance of a medal in the junior boys grade. He has posted a very fast 3000m time this summer. He is also doing the 1500m.

James Coates should at least gain a top eight in the discus, as he has been throwing over 50m this summer. He is also competing in the shot put, but will be up against some massive North Island lads.

Bradley Jervis 400m and 800m, and Luke de Roo 100m and 200m will gain valuable experience for the future and could surprise, having shown good form of late.

Also happening on the Sunday morning is the New Zealand Road Champs and Ethan Smolej has put all his focus into winning the Year 9 Road Race. Ethan came third in the New Zealand Cross Country Championships earlier this year here in Christchurch, so must have a good chance of at least gaining another medal.

As usual we will have a team in both grades of the 4 x 400m relay, which is the last event on Sunday afternoon. The final chance of the year for the athletes to show their commitment to each other and the College. We wish them all the best and look forward to hearing how they got on.
