Mrs Clare Kissick —

Information and Updates.

BASKETBALL

Congratulations to the Senior A Basketball team who had an outstanding win over Shirley Boys’ High School on Tuesday night, beating them 95 to 82. Walter Brown top scored with 34 points; Taylor Willis scored 24 and Jacob Svoboda with an outstanding 19 points.

This puts the team third in the Christchurch Thompson Trophy Competition and by coming third have qualified for the Nationals in Palmerston North in the first week of the October holidays. The tournament will only go ahead if the country moves into Alert Level 1.

This is the first time the basketball team have qualified for the Nationals since 2010.

A big thank you to Mr Ven and Mr Mackwell for coaching the team on Saturdays and Tuesday night games.

CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS

These were held in Dunedin last weekend, with Ethan Smolej coming 3rd in the Under 18 men’s. Ethan ran a great race and is preparing well for the Secondary School Nationals next month. Ethan also ran in the teams race for Canterbury who took out first place to win a National title for Canterbury. A great effort as well over 300 hundred runners took part.

Mr Gamblin also ran at the Nationals taking out first place in the older section of the race.

CRICKET

Congratulations to Matthew Boyle who has been selected for the New Zealand Under 19 cricket squad. Matthew will attend a training camp for the squad in two weeks time at the Cricket New Zealand indoor training facility in Lincoln. We wish him all the very best for selection.

HOCKEY

The 1st XI had a great start to their South Island Tournament on Monday beating John McGlasson College 3-0 and Nelson College 8-0, but went down to Christchurch Boys’ High School 0-3.

They played really well against Timaru Boys High School, and with some school support they came away with a 4-2 win. Unfortunately the loss to Boys' High cost them and they went into a playoff for 3rd and 4th position, against Christ’s College. Unfortunately the boys had a very close game, ending with a penalty stroke resulting in Christ’s winning 3-2. So St Bede’s finished 4th in the South Island premium competition.

TRAP SHOOTING

Our Trap Shooting Boys took part in an interschool shoot at the weekend.

Tom Lewis was the standout shooter wining two medals in the B Grade Year 9 and 10 event. Tom was 1st in the points score – scoring a possible 60 out of 60 which is not done very often, he was 2nd in the single barrel scoring 9 out of 10 and in the single rise scored 18 out of 20 which was an outstanding achievement for a novice shooter.

Congratulations to Tom.

SQUASH

Good luck to Zac Pattinson who is competing in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Squash Tournament this weekend – we wish Zac all the very best of luck.
