Updates and Information

Chaneys On-ramp closed permanently

To connect the new CNC motorway to SH1 some changes are needed. As planned, the existing Chaneys on-ramp is being removed to make way for the CNC northbound lanes.

We have left the Chaneys On-ramp open for as long as we can, but we now need to close it for good from Tuesday 27 October to complete work in this area.

Closing the Chaneys On-ramp means there is no access to SH1 at this point. If you want to use SH1 from Marshland Road you can access it by either using QEII Drive, Prestons Road, Radcliffe Road or Belfast Road to access Main North Road and then SH1. These roads all have traffic signals, making a right turn onto Main North Road easier. (The Belfast Road signals will be activated in the next few weeks.) You could also continue on Marshland Road and Main North Road to enter SH1 from Ohoka Road.

Cranford Street night work

Work continues between PlaceMakers and the new Cranford Street Roundabout.

To minimise traffic impact, we will do this work at night. This work started on Sunday evening 18 October and will continue each night until Thursday 22 October, work will start around 7pm each night.

During this night work traffic will be managed with lane shifts. The work will involve digging, milling, truck movements and compacting the ground before asphalting, so nearby residents will hear the noise from the machines and the crew working at night.

Sealing SH1 north & south of the Waimakariri Bridge

We are ready to stabilise and re-seal SH1 north and south of the Waimakariri Bridge. From Sunday night 18 October and continuing until late November, north and southbound traffic on SH1 will be reduced to one lane each night.

Work starts on the north and southbound right-hand lanes and will then move to the middle lanes and finally the left-hand lanes.

A 60km/h speed limit will be in place on this part of SH1 during the night work and while there is loose chip on the road. This work should not create any significant delays overnight. Northbound lane reduction times are 7pm to 7am. Southbound lane reduction times are 6pm to 5.30am

What are we doing? We start with foam bitumen stabilisation, which creates a strong but flexible base layer. (This is done using a train made up of a bitumen tanker, a milling machine and a water cart.) We will then chip seal the road. In between the foaming and chip sealing, the surface needs to harden for several days.

The final stage of sealing the road is laying the asphalt surface. In some areas this will need to wait until the chip seal has been down for about a year.

Sealing the new motorway

Sealing on the new motorway is going well. We are now working in the area between QEII Drive and Prestons Road.

Just a reminder - we will be working longer hours when possible - between 6am and 12am. But as the crew move fast, we won’t be in one place for more than a few days. Nearby residents will hear the noise from the machinery and may notice ground vibrations from the graders and compactors.

All going well the CNC will be ready to open in mid-December this year.

What do you think is important for Greater Christchurch in 2050?

While the year 2050 might seem a long time away, to meet the future needs of our communities, we need to start planning now.

That’s why the Greater Christchurch Partnership is creating a new plan for our sub-region with everyone that has an interest in the area. The partnership consists of councils, the district health board, Ngāi Tahu and government agencies such as Waka Kotahi.

Greater Christchurch 2050 will describe the kind of place we want for our future generations, and the actions we need to take over the next 30 years to make it happen.

What you do think Greater Christchurch should look like in 30 years.
