Rector's Report

Jon McDowall —

Malo e lei lei,

In my first newsletter as Rector of the College, I outlined that I inherited a school rich in its faith with an amazing community at its heart. The sudden and sad passing of Quinn Miller in Year 13 has seen our community rally around Quinn’s family and each other during this sad and difficult time. I wish to acknowledge our staff, students, parents, and the wider community for the manner in which you have wrapped around each other, your heartfelt messages and prayers, and your offers of support for Quinn’s family and our community.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Quinn’s family and friends. Quinn was a caring, diligent, driven and hard-working young man with a wicked sense of humour. He was a talented and competitive sportsman who excelled on the hockey field, playing a key role in our team’s success and culture in recent years. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. A book of condolence is in the Chapel of St Bede for those who wish to share memories, thoughts, prayers and messages for the family.

Eternal rest, grant to him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Currently, Mrs Pitcaithly, myself, and 16 students are in Tonga on our first faith and cultural immersion exchange with Apifo’ou College. It has been a privilege to be welcomed into the Apifo’ou community with the students experiencing Tongan culture, school, and parish life, as well as undertaking service in the community. We are grateful to Fr ‘Ekuasi Manu, Lord Fred Sevele and the wonderful team who have coordinated what has been a life-changing trip for many of our students. You can read more about our trip in this newsletter.

I wish to congratulate Louis Sharp on winning the 2023 ROKit British F4 Racing Championship this past weekend. This is truly an outstanding achievement for such a young man. We look forward to seeing what's next in Louis’ pursuit of his Formula 1 dream.

Take care and God bless.
