Teen Ag students bound for Young Farmer Grand Final

John McPhail —

On Saturday, 2 March, 12 students from the Teen Ag club competed in the Tasman Region Junior Young Farmer Competition at Canterbury Agricultural Park. The boys had to complete  seven tasks that were run by agricultural business and industry organisations.

These tasks were:

  • FMG: Looking at flood risk on farms and how you might manage flood prevention and response.
  • Lincoln University: Investigating soil water and factors that determine the amount of water in soil.
  • Ospri: Applying NAIT tags to cattle, animal status declarations, and tracking animal movements between farms.
  • Massey University: Looking at the digestive tracts of different types of livestock.
  • MPI: Rules and regulations around transporting stock.
  • Fire and Emergency NZ: What can you burn in different levels of fire risk?
  • Fencing: Assessing the skills involved in tying different fencing knots.

After the seven modules were completed, the top five teams were named and three of these teams were from St Bede's. These teams then competed in a buzzer-style quiz, with the points then added to their module scores.

Connor Carroll and Oliver Carter ended up in second place and have secured a spot at the Grand Final in July. Jack Higinbottom finished in fourth and Thomas Borcoskie and Dan Scott finished fifth. Two other teams finished in seventh and eighth, so having five teams in the top eight was a great result for our club.

We look forward to the challenge of preparing for the Grand Final.
