From the Rector

Mr Justin Boyle —

Greetings from St Bede’s

The weather on Tuesday felt like summer. The weather the following day, our Open Day, felt like the middle of winter! Despite that we had approximately 600+ people through the College and on the whole it was a most successful day.

The second of the NCEA Teacher Only Days was held yesterday. The focus of the day was to discuss Mana Ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori and the literacy and numeracy changes in detail, and to identify what supports we might need to implement the changes here at St Bede's. The overall aim for NCEA is equitable access for all students by 2025.

As a College we are in a very good position to adopt what the Ministry of Education is proposing, relating very much to the series of changes we have already made in the last three years.

One of our staff delivered an interesting reflection this week in light of the tragedies involving schools in other parts of the world this week, in stark contrast (touch wood) to the educational environment we enjoy in this country.

The reflection is about tolerance:

The most loveable quality anyone can possess is tolerance.
It is the vision that enables one to see things from another's viewpoint.
It is the generosity that concedes to others the right to their own opinion and their peculiarities.
It is the means that enables us to let people be happy in their own way instead of our way.

Until next week,

J. G. Boyle
