Mrs Clare Kissick —

This week's update contains news and successes in cricket, kayaking, surf-life saving, basketball and the upcoming swimming and touch competitions.

Cricket

  • The 1st XI traditional game against Silverstream earlier this week did not get off to a good start when they sent us into bat and we only managed 149 runs.  Silverstream went onto score 200 taking a 51 run lead.  Jackson Hemingway 4/48 and Matt Munro 4/42 were the leading wicket takers for St Bede’s.  Batting second we were dismissed for a disappointing 119 runs.  Will Aynsley 38 was the leading run scorer.  Silverstream did not take long to score the 69 runs to win. The 1st XI now travel to Wellington with the Colts team to take on St Pat’s town this Sunday.  We wish them well.

  • NZCT – The Regional Final saw our Year 9A team play Christchurch Boys’ High School at Mainpower Oval yesterday.  Boys High were put into bat and were all out for 152. Top bowlers were Elliott Caddick 3/12, James McSweeney 2/17, and Reuben Stoffers 2/24.  Matthew Boyle and James McSweeney got the boys off to an excellent start scoring 64 and 31 respectively.  Some good decision making by George Baker and Sam Kreft saw them steady the ship when they were six wickets down. George was caught with 3 runs required to win, Walter Brown came in and blocked the next 3 ball which saw Sam hit the winning runs, and ended with 24.  This win see the team go onto the National finals in Palmerston North at the end of March, which is the first time in 10 years since we have achieved this.

  • Canterbury Metro Cricket Awards were held on last Friday night and St Bede's College did very well at them with Matthew Boyle taking out the Year 9 individual batting award with 613 runs with an average of 153.  Mason Cumming took out the Bowling with 16 wickets for an average of 4.9.  Liam Campbell ex 1st XI 2016 took out the 1st XI individual batting award scoring 537 runs at an average of 38 runs.

As you can see cricket is in very good heart here at St Bede's College and I would just like to thank all the parents that help make this possible, and your help is really appreciated by all here at the College.
