Food Technology Update - Term 2

Mrs B Bickerstaff —

Food Technology is well and truly up and running now and the boys have all been busy creating and eating.

Year 9

All the boys have been learning the basic skills and techniques to create quality end products such as pizza scrolls, a variety of biscuits, muffins and burgers. They have also experimented with changing up the ingredients in food products and evaluating the results and discussing what this change has on the final product.

Year 10

One of the tasks the boys had to do as to create a food product for a stakeholder to meet their needs. Many of them worked with a player of the 1st XV to create a nutritionally balanced food product they could eat before training. The boys were fortunate to have Wendy Scalon, who is a parent and nutritionist, come in and speak to the class. James Baird's stakeholder was Sam Sparrow and some very favourable feedback was given to James!

Year 11

As well as continuing to develop their skills, the boys have focused on the importance of balance, nutritional eating throughout the day and ensuring they are eating food from all food groups. They had to design a daily menu plan for a teenage boy, then prepare and present a meal from that menu ensuring at least two cooking processes were incorporated. Steak was a popular choice, but they had to make sure there were more veggies than steak on the plate!

Year 12

This term has seen individual practical assessments take place including preparing and presenting a variety of salads such as a spicy chicken pasta salad. They have also been fortunate to have guest chefs come in and demonstrate top level skills to them, including Max and Sam from 5th Street and old boy, Michael O’Keeffe who is working in the recently opened Athens Yacht Club.

The boys are now learning the art of coffee making with guest barista Aaron French taking them through their training. They will be all involved in running a café during Term 3 and putting their coffee making skills to the test.
