From the Rector

Mr Justin Boyle —

Greetings from St Bede’s.

Week 7 of the term coincides with the beginning of spring! Winter sports season continues for many teams over the next few weeks.

Congratulations to the 1st XI hockey team who had a most successful week in their tournament finishing 4th in the South Island.

The Senior A basketball team beat Shirley Boys' High School on Tuesday night, and in so doing qualified for the nationals for the first time since 2010. Their games on Tuesday night have attracted large crowds. It has been disappointing for them that there have been limitations in who can physically attend the games to watch due to the C-19 restrictions. Live-streamed games is the next best way!

Twenty Year 12 students participated in a programme led by the Young Marist Team, called "Marist Youth Neighbours". Normally this is a week-long programme for Year 12 students from the nine Marist Colleges of New Zealand, which takes place in a remote and very poor community in the North Island. Because of the pandemic, this programme has been condensed to one day. Confronting social justice issues like the growing gap between the rich and the poor in our society, racism in New Zealand and the world, were explored.

Congratulations to Mr Diarmuid McMahon who has been appointed to the role of Assistant Rector - Wellbeing & Engagement, to begin in Term 4. This new role has been created to develop our pastoral system further.

Until next week,

J.G. Boyle
