“As a person who was involved from the beginning of the IRP at St Bede’s it is great news to see it return in its new and expanded form. The fact that so many former students remain in touch and continue to recognise the programme and their experiences at St Bede’s as life-changing and life-defining is particularly pleasing. The diversity they added to the College and the genuine and positive interaction they had with the wider school community remains a lasting legacy. We look forward to meeting the next generation of IRP students and Bedeans in 2019.”

“The return of the International Rugby Programme is a wonderful thing. It brings so much to both the players on the Programme and to the New Zealand boys they play with. The friendships that form over a season of training and playing last forever. The development of the players abilities and belief in themselves in the past has been an amazing transformation at times and the exposure to another culture is an important part of the Programme as well. Personally I have been involved in the program for a long time and have made lasting friendships with both players and the coaches that have visited our school. I hope the new program can continue to both build the players skill and the long tradition of building lasting friendships.”

“I still remember my first day in New Zealand and how I was welcomed by wonderfully kind people in a country that nobody from my family had even heard of. At the age of just seventeen, totally focused on creating a successful rugby career, I flew over many oceans from West Africa to get there. St. Bede’s College gave me an opportunity that changed my life. My success is due to the understanding and advice of the friendly people I met there in Christchurch. I thank Mark and Miyuki Ealey who took care of me like a son, giving me lots of ideas, and their sons, who accepted me like their brother. I could write a book about the experience. I am eternally grateful to St. Bede’s College for giving me the opportunity to set off on the life I am leading now.”

「自分の家族誰一人もが聞いたことのないニュージーランドという国に到着した日にとても親切な人たちが私を迎え入れたことを今も鮮明に覚えています。ラグビーのキャリアを始めたいという猛烈な野心を持って、たった１７歳の時に遠い西アフリカからいくつかの海を渡って行きました。セント・ビーヅは自分の人生を変えるための大きなチャンスを与えてくれました。それからの私の成功はクライストチャーチで出会った愉快な方々の理解とアドバイスのおかげです。マークさんとみゆきさんが息子のように受け入れてくれて、アイデアをたくさん与えてくれました。彼らの実の息子たちも自分を兄弟のように接してくれました。今の人生の土台を作るためのチャンスを与えてくれたセント・ビーヅ・カレッジの方々に対して感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。」

“Back in 2005 I was attracted by the idea of travelling to New Zealand to have the most intense rugby experience possible. The five-and-a-half-month programme was very well-organized with excellent content, so much so that it was an experience that not only contributed to my growth as a player, but gave me the opportunity to study English and to come in contact with the cultures of several overseas countries. It goes without saying that the rugby was a high level and that allowed me to reconfirm that rugby is both physically demanding but very enjoyable at the same time. It was my first experience of studying abroad so I went to St. Bede’s harbouring a mixture of excitement, anticipation and unease, but the time I spent there with like-minded friends from all over the world is now a treasured memory.”

「私は2005年にラグビーの本場でプレーしたいと思い留学しました。 半年間のプログラムはとても充実していて、ラグビーだけでなく語学勉強や海外の文化に触れる事で自分の考えを変える貴重な経験をしました。 もちろんラグビーはハイレベルで、激しくも楽しいスポーツだと改めて感じる事が出来ました。 初めての留学で期待と不安がありながらも同じ志を持った仲間と過ごした半年間は私にとって貴重な財産です。」

“It goes without saying that my IRP experience had a significant impact both on my rugby and business careers. Being coached detail by top coaches until I had good grasp of what was needed was a far cry from the abstract “toughen up” and “go hard!” coaching so common in Japan. Canterbury in New Zealand ranks among the very best places in the world to be learning rugby skills. It is not only a province that produces All Black galore, but it has produced some of the world’s best coaches in Steve Hansen, Scott Robertson, Robbie Deans and Wayne Smith to name but a few. The IRP exposes you to the same coaching philosophy espoused by these top coaches. It is very probably the only one of its kind in the world. And indeed its impact on the players who attend it goes beyond just rugby. After finishing playing rugby the flexibility and thinking skills taught in the IRP will serve you well. It is clear that the IRP offers far more than any other programme. I hope that many young people pluck up the courage to experience the IRP. For those from Japan, it offers much that you are simply unable to experience in your home country.”

「ラグビープログラムを体験したことが自身のラグビーキャリアやビジネスキャリアに大きく影響を及ぼしたことは言うまでもない。一流のコーチのもとで徹底的に叩き込まれるのは、日本で教え込まれるような「根性」や「気合い」といった抽象的なものではない。ニュージーランド・カンタベリー地区で脈々と受け継がれる世界最高水準のラグビースキルだ。カンタベリー地区は数多くのオールブラックスを輩出した地区でもあるが、世界最高レベルの指導者を輩出した地区でもある。スティーブ・ハンセン、スコット・ロバートソン、ロビー・ディーンズ、ウェイン・スミスなど。今もなお世界で活躍し続けるコーチ達が提唱するラグビーをプログラムを通じて学ぶことができる。このようなプログラムは世界を見てもIRPだけでないか。そして、このプログラムが影響を及ぼす範囲はラグビーだけではない。ラグビーキャリアを終えてからのビジネスキャリアにもプログラムで養った柔軟性や思考力が活きてくる。IRPが他にあるようなラグビープログラムでないことは明らかである。皆さんもIRPを通じて、世界最高のラグビーを体感してほしい。そこには日本では決して体験することのできない時間が待っているはず。」

“I still clearly remember so many marvellous aspects of my experience in the Rugby Programme despite more than ten years having gone by since I took part. So much of what I learned there during my six-month stay – things I could not have learned in Japanese high schools of the day - has become the essence of my handbook for life. At high school age, coming to understand how enjoyable rugby is, how deep and complex it is, experiencing how friendly and caring the local people are, are things that stay with you for life. I sincerely hope that as many Japanese high school students as possible will challenge themselves on this programme and then go on to become key contributors in Japanese rugby.”
