From the Rector

Jon McDowall —

Kia ora,

I would like to start by congratulating Fr Rick Loughnan on becoming a Monsignor for his distinguished and exceptional service to the Church. This is a title bestowed to him by Pope Francis, the Holy Father. We are fortunate to have Monsignor Rick as part of our faith and learning community, an achievement and recognition that is certainly well deserved.

This past Sunday we hosted the termly Boarding Whānau luncheon and Mass. It was great to see so many of our boarding whānau, students and staff coming together to celebrate the Eucharist and enjoy each other’s company. Boarding has a rich tradition at St Bede’s, and with the boarding school being at maximum capacity, we look forward to this tradition for many years to come.

Last Friday, the Bedean Choir performed at the annual Big Sing competition. Our boys did the college extremely proud by performing three high-quality pieces, with the highlight being There is Nothing Like a Dame, which was, without doubt, the crowd favourite at the evening gala. You are able to see the choir perform, alongside our Year 13 Rock Band and Rockquest finalists Fifty Toes, this coming Wednesday at the Variety Concert.

All the best to our rugby community for Club Day this weekend. With all teams at home, it is a great opportunity to come along and support the club and our students.

Once again, thank you for your understanding of the ongoing industrial action. I appreciate that this action may cause some distress to our staff, students, and whānau as we consider how to manage the implications of ongoing industrial action while being respectful of the views of all parties. All our staff wish for a timely resolution and are working hard to adjust programmes and learning opportunities to minimise disruption where possible. Please note that when your son is rostered home, he will have learning that he can continue with from home.

A reminder that Day School Enrolments for next year close on 31 July. I am aware that there is some discussion among the community regarding the enrolment process. You can find the enrolment scheme we intend to apply for 2024 by clicking here.
