Mark Ocwich from Uganda & Devlin Hope from South Africa (Seventh intake, 2009)

Mark: "I was fortunate enough to participate in the 2009 International Rugby Programme at St. Bede’s College. I learned many things that have been useful for me back here in my rugby activities in Uganda. From the detailed organization that supported the teams to the really thorough strength and conditioning programme that prepared our players to perform on the field. The success of Bedean teams through the grades that year was underpinned by a lot of hard work on S&C.

The IRP provided us foreign players with a marvellous environment for bonding and building friendships. The staff worked hard to organize activities and some of us went into mainstream academic classes.

During the April and July holidays we went into homestays, which gave me another valuable social experience about New Zealand and life in general. I have kept in touch ever since.

The IRP skill sessions transformed my skills during the 22 weeks I was in Christchurch. I went from a boy who probably hardly even resembled a rugby player to holding my own in the NZ Secondary School final against Hamilton BHS. The skills and understanding of rugby that I gained at St. Bede’s made me to able coach players back here in Uganda. My team coaches taught me a great deal about how a young man should conduct himself as a player. I am eternally grateful for the advice and learnings that I got at St. Bede’s.

My IRP experience at St. Bede’s shaped my life. I gained many skills to further my rugby career as a player and coach/administrator and also learned many life skills from the different engagements I shared with people during my time in New Zealand.

I sincerely hope that many more international rugby players are able to have the same experience that I enjoyed. It will definitely impact positively on their lives."

「2009年のラグビー留学プログラムに参加できる機会に恵まれました。ここウガンダでのラグビー活動で役に立つことをたくさん覚えて帰りました。チームを成功させるための細かい準備から選手の体力作りに必要不可欠なストレンス＆コンディショニング（S＆C）まで経験して帰りました。セント・ビーヅの黄金時代の功績は実にS＆Cから始まったと実感しました。ラグビー留学プログラムは私たち外国人選手がお互いに友情関係を築いて、グループ内で強い絆を作る環境でした。スタッフはよく面倒を見てくれて、色々とアクティビティを考えてくれました。英語のできる選手は現地の子と同じ授業をいくつか受けることもできました。

私たちは４月と７月の休みの間に寮から出てホームスティに入りましたので、そこでニュージーランドのことをより一層理解ができ、その上に貴重な社会勉強ができました。受け入れてくれた方とその時から今だにずっと連絡をとっています。

留学プログラムの２２週間に受けたスキルセッションでの指導のおかげで、ラグビーの初心者からニュージーランド高校の全国大会の決勝戦で通用する選手に成長しました。セント・ビーヅで身につけたスキルとラグビーIQのおかげで、ここウガンダに帰ってきてから母国の子供にコーチングができるようになりました。私の所属した１軍のコーチたちが、若者が選手としての振る舞うべき言動についてたくさんのことを教えてくれ成長をさせてくれたことに対して感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。この留学経験が私の人生に与えた影響はとても大きいです。選手がラグビーの運営に関わる人たちとだけではなく、いろいろな場での現地の方々との触れ合いによって大事なライフスキルを学ぶことができました。これからたくさんの若者がセント・ビーヅのラグビー留学プログラムで、私と同じような経験ができるよう祈っています。彼らの人生にいい影響を与えると確信しています。」

Devlin: “Being part of the International Rugby Programme is one of my fondest memories not only of things on the rugby pitch but meeting loads of people from all walks of life. I learned invaluable lessons that have help me be successful in rugby where I went on to be a professional rugby player for six years, winning a Currie Cup Friday Division Medal, and off the pitch. I learned skills that have made me very successful in my life as an account manager for Asahi UK after finishing full-time rugby. I’m still playing 3rd tier rugby in the UK and still draw on the experiences learnt back in 2009!”

「ラグビー留学プログラムで得た経験はゲームだけではなく、色々な方に出会えたということも自分の人生での宝物です。自分の6年間のプロ選手のキャリアはセント・ビーヅの経験の上にできています。留学中に身につけたライフスキルもラグビー人生後のASAHI・UKでのキャリアでも今だに活かしています。今はイギリスの3部リーグでまだラグビーをしており、2009年にセント・ビーヅで得たスキルをまだ実践しています。」
