Christchurch City Council —

An upgrade on progress to the Northern Corridor.

HILLS ROAD SUBWAY UPGRADE

As part of our project we are upgrading and lengthening the existing Hills Road subway. Work to renovate the Hills Road Subway will start in the week of Monday, 30 October and will take six months to complete. We are renovating the existing entry ramps and walls to improve paedestrian sightlines. The internal subway walls and ceilings will be resurfaced and additional lighting will installed. We are also resurfacing the pavement with asphalt. Vegetation around the subway entrance will be removed and more appropriate vegetation will be planted later.

Construction Impact: To demolish part of the walls we will use a hydro demolition technique, this can be noisy.

Traffic Impact: Due to the size of the work site we will have to temporarily close one traffic lane on Hills Road near the subway.

From Monday 30 October there will be no entry to Hills Road from QEII Drive. The left turn out of Hills Road onto QEII Drive remains available. The preferred detour is via Marshland Road and McSaveneys Road. When we are working inside the subway there will be less space available to paedestrians and cyclists. A 1.2m path stays in place at all times during the construction and might have some small steps. At times cyclists may need to walk their bikes.

The traffic management stays in place over the Christmas period as construction work will continue in early January. This work is scheduled for completion in early April 2018.

GRIMSEYS ROAD SUBWAY UPGRADE

As part of our project we are upgrading and lengthening the existing Grimseys Road subway. Work to renovate the Grimseys Road Subway will start in the week of Monday, 30 October and will take six months to complete.

We are renovating the existing entry ramps and walls to improve pedestrian sightlines. The internal subway walls and ceilings will be resurfaced and additional lighting will be installed. We are also resurfacing the pavement with asphalt. Vegetation around the subway entrance will be removed and more appropriate vegetation will be planted later.

Construction Impact To demolish part of the walls we will use a hydro demolition technique, this can be noisy.

Traffic Impact

When we are working inside the subway there will be less space available to pedestrians and cyclists. A 1.2m wide path will be useable all times during the construction and might have some small steps.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience while we upgrade the subway.

Cyclists please take care when using the subway the path is reduced in size so reduce speed and give way to pedestrians. At some times it may be advisable to walk your bike.

This work is scheduled for completion in early April 2018.

MEDIAN AND U-TURN

Cranford Street will be four laned with a continuous central median. This will improve safety by removing right turns at Knowles Street, Weston Road and McFaddens Road. The median will also reduce delays and stop commuters using suburban streets as rat-runs or short cuts.

To allow for easier access to shops and residents living on Cranford Street U-turn bays are provided north of McFaddens Road on Cranford Street: two for northbound traffic and two for southbound traffic.

Work notices will be delivered to inform local residents, property owners and business owners prior to construction starting. They will provide you with information on the impact of the work, the traffic management and the timeframes for the work in front of your house/ business.
