Gifted and Talented - Introducing the Great Kiwi Science, English and Mathematics Competitions

For many years, schools have participated in the Australian English, Maths and Science competitions.  This year there is another option.

This year the University of Canterbury is delighted to launch the great Kiwi English, Mathematics and Science competitions for primary, intermediate and secondary schools. The Kiwi competitions are written by New Zealand teachers for New Zealand students and are based on the New Zealand Curriculum. the online competitions will be run in the last 2 weeks of Term 2. 

Questions in the Kiwi Science Competition are skills based and cover:

  • Investigating - Experimental design, use of controls and the notion of a 'fair test'
  • Interpreting data - Interpreting diagrams, tables and graphs
  • Critical thinking skills - reasoning, problem solving and logical deduction

The tests use every day contexts relevant to the following stands of the Science in the New Zealand Curriculum:

  • Nature of Science
  • Living World
  • Planet Earth and Beyond
  • Physical World
  • Material World

All participating students will be awarded a certificate and medals will be awarded to top students in each year group.
