The latest update

QEII Drive - Grimseys Road intersection closure

Our work to construct two extra lanes on QEII Drive west, in between Grimseys Road and Main North Road, starts this month. We will first clear the site and install safety barriers. To allow safe construction of the two lanes Grimseys Road intersection will be temporarily closed.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Starting Monday 19 February we will be clearing the berm area next to QEII Drive west. It is where we will build the two extra lanes to upgrade SH74. The site clearance work involves tree felling and vegetation removal. To allow us to construct the two extra lanes, we need to install steel safety barriers along the road. This will protect our workers and keep drivers on the road safely away from our work site. The barrier installation will happen over three nights starting 25 February till 27 February.

We have already installed these steel barriers on QEII Drive near the new southern interchange and on the eastern side up to Hills Road. From 28 February, we will start excavations and bringing in the bulk fill material. To make this a safe work site for our workers, the nearby residents and the traffic on QEII Drive, we will have to close the Grimseys Road intersection during our construction. This means that from Tuesday evening 27 February a traffic detour will be in place.  See map overleaf for detour.

GRIMSEYS ROAD INTERSECTION CLOSED

From Tuesday evening 27 February the Grimseys Road/QEII Drive intersection will be closed. Residential and commuting traffic will need to take a detour via Daniels Road. See map below.

The intersection closure will stay in place during the construction of the two lanes till mid May 2018. We will then temporarily open the intersection to one lane of traffic.

From early September to mid-October the intersection will be closed again while we construct the new intersection. Once the two lanes and the new intersection are in place, in mid- October, we will move traffic over to the two new lanes to start work on the south side of QEII Drive. Further updates on this will be provided.

To construct the two extra lanes we will have to bring in 5,500 m3 imported bulk fill material (gravel). Closure of the intersection allows for safe truck movements.

 TREE FELLING

To remove the trees and vegetation we will have to close the shoulder on QEII Drive between Main North Road and Grimseys Road. Road traffic cones will be placed to shield the shoulder from 19 February to 21 February.

BARRIER INSTALLATION

To install the safety barriers we will close the entry to QEII Drive from Main North Road/Northcote Road for two nights. See the No Entry text box to the right for information on the detour.

Installing barriers needs to happen at night due to the high traffic volumes during the day. The night work will take place between 7pm and 6am.

On Tuesday night 27 February we will stop traffic on both lanes on QEII Drive near the Grimseys Road intersection for a short time while each barrier is placed.

A stop/go person will manage the traffic. This may impact on your journey by up to five minutes.

NO ENTRY TO QEII DRIVE FOR TWO NIGHTS

On Sunday night 25 February and Monday night 26 February we need to close the entry to QEII Drive from Main North Road/Northcote Road. To enter QEII Drive please drive via Prestons Road and Grimseys Road or Cranford Street, Innes Road and Philpotts Road.

 CONSTRUCTION IMPACT

Some activities will be noisy, including tree felling, truck movements  and the placing of steel barriers. Nearby residents may also experience ground vibrations from this work.

We need to install the barriers at night to avoid causing congestion and for safety reasons. Nearby residents may hear noise from trucks, machinery and drilling when the barriers are fastened to the ground. The barriers are collected from our site near Prestons Road/Grimseys Road.

Residents in this area may notice some noise when the barriers are collected; we are hoping to do this in the late afternoon.

Dust is also possible which we will keep at bay with water trucks. Our standard work hours are Monday to Saturday between 7am and 7pm.

 Southern Interchange

The new motorway will go over QEII Drive on a bridge while access to and from QEII Drive and the new motorway will be provided by double roundabouts below the bridge. You may have seen the walls of the bridge and the gravel piles taking shape along QEII Drive east.

From mid-February we will start building two new traffic lanes along QEII Drive west to upgrade QEII Drive to four lanes of traffic. The work may impact your travel time and will involve a detour for residents living in the Grimseys Road north area.

Grimseys Road

When we have completed the QEII Drive upgrade, access at Grimseys Road will be left in and left out only. Vehicles travelling westbound on QEII Drive will be able to access Grimseys Road by using a U-turn bay, to be installed late 2019.

Local traffic exiting Grimseys Road will use the Southern Interchange to head west.

TRUCK MOVEMENTS

We will have around sixty truck and trailers delivering gravel each day. This means an increase of truck movements on Grimseys Road. Please be aware of our

trucks and their heavy loads. The trucks will enter our site near the closed Grimseys Road intersection with QEII Drive.

Residents living on Sheraton Place and close to the intersection please look towards our work site entrance and expect heavy traffic on Grimseys Road. Take extra care when leaving and entering your street and driveway.
