Rugby Refereeing as an Option

Mr. Mark Ealey —

"You-Make-The-Call"

Refereeing is an excellent way to stay closely involved in our great game without actually playing.

Current St. Bede's student Bram Lutters had the following to say about his refereeing experience in 2019: "Being a referee allowed me to assume a neutral view towards a game, which gave me a fresh perspective on rugby. It showed me that rugby is a sport that relies heavily on structure. Through being a referee, you can observe how both teams compete to win, and sense how the flow of a game changes in the course of the contest. Refereeing has also given me a deeper insight into the laws of rugby."

Refereeing is a genuine contribution to society. It also helps to maintain fitness and helps young people develop confidence. Please consider refereeing if you are not planning to play in 2020.

"You-Make-The-Call" training is available to students interested in giving refereeing a go. Canterbury RFU official Lyndon McKendry states: "The You-Make-The-Call" (YMTC) course dates for 2020 are 20-22 April. The course is one unit standard worth 10 credits at Level 3. Students must log a total of 100 hours of training, which will include attending the course, completing a work book, actual refereeing with a mentor in attendance, upskilling themselves around things such as game knowledge and mental skills, plus various other options. They will be reviewed at least three times once their mentor believes they are ready to be assessed."

St. Bede's College also recognises the boys' contribution to sport.  Director of Sport Clare Kissock explains, "The College acknowledges the young referees with a trophy at prize-giving and we pay their refereeing fees. If they do it for two years, we give them a honours pocket."
