Year 12
What school subjects should I take?

If you're thinking about what subjects to study at school next year, a key tip from many experts is to choose subjects you are passionate about, because if you enjoy something you are more likely to get good at it.

Of course, sometimes you need to do something in the short term that might not be a favourite topic in order to get to where you want to be. Before you get to Year 13, it's important to know the school subjects you need to take if you're thinking about studying certain subjects at university.

For all subjects at university, students need to be competent in the use and understanding of written and spoken English. School subjects such as English, Classical Studies, History, Geography or Economics are useful in teaching these key skills.

Some careers and degrees have recommended pathways from school, for example some qualifications require specific achievement levels in subjects such as Physics or Calculus.

Detailed information on subjects that are useful for particular qualifications is available from a variety of sources:

Making wise subject choices now, can make achieving your goals in the future easier, so you are welcome to contact UC's Future Student Advisors if you have any questions or want some advice.

Yr 13…
Unsure what to study next year? Then take this quiz

Deciding what to study can be a tough decision for many students, so take UC's quiz to focus your attention on some options that might suit you.

If you're not sure which UC qualification you want to study, this short quiz could help identify some suggestions to look into.

Please choose the answers closest to your opinion, even if they are not perfectly accurate for you.
(When you get your results at the end, click the 'More details' wording to find out more about that option.)

Do what’s right for you

Remember – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What's important is that you do what feels right for you – not because all your friends are studying X degree or because your parents want you to study Y.

By taking the time to research the best way to get to where you want to be, you'll be in a great position to take that next step, in whichever direction it may be.

Still unclear about what you want to do for a job?

What is Hands on at Otago?

It’s a week-long experience of Otago student life, open to

all

students who are in Years 12 and 13 in 2023.

Students stay in one of two student colleges on campus and chose their favourite subject to study for the week from a range of 33 topics – from humanities, business, health sciences and sciences – allowing them to get hands-on in a university department.

Hands-On at Otago 2023 will run from Sunday 15 January to Friday 20 January. Last year we had more applications than places on offer, so it is important that students prepare their applications with care.

The number of participants is limited to 400. The supporting material supplied by students is read by members of the Hands-On at Otago committee and is often the deciding factor in their acceptance.

To find out more or to apply, go to: otago.ac.nz/hands-on-at-otago

On the website you can also discover what other activities are on offer, how much the week will cost, ideas for fundraising, information on the scholarships that are available, transport options and accommodation details.

All applications and Scholarship applications for Hands-On at Otago will need to be submitted through the Hands-On at Otago webpage.

Applications for Hands-on at Otago close: Thursday 8 September 2022.

If you have any further questions please email: hands-on@otago.ac.nz

We look forward to hearing from you and receiving applications from your students.

Ngā mihi,

The Hands-On at Otago Committee

That's why people volunteer! It's almost a side benefit to the 303,000 people whose lives are impacted, each year, by some act of kindness from a volunteer who has gifted their time!

What roles are available?
