Coaches for the 2018 season.

The St Bede’s College Football Club is looking for volunteer coaches for the 2018 season. If you have played or coached before, or just have a passion for the game and want to get involved, we would love to hear from you.

Rowing

If your son requires rowing uniforms please make sure he meets in the College shop at Monday lunchtime to try on samples.

Water Polo

Great win by our Junior team last night against St Andrews College with a 21 to 2 win. 

Ryan Crosbie and Jake Rockford are doing a wonderful job coaching this team.

Winter prize giving 2017

As all of you are aware, the gym has been out of action for all of term 3 so we were unable to hold our normal winter sports prize giving assembly. 

Basketball, Football, Hockey and Rugby each held their own prize givings and their awards and honour pockets were given out at their prize givings.

Today we have a few sports we need to make mention of and award the following awards.

Badminton

Sportsmanship and Endeavour (Mike Sunderland Trophy)

Chess 

Has grown in the College this year thanks to Dr Jordens expertise and guideness, he took two teams to the Canterbury Champs where they performed especially well and then went on to take a team of 5 students to the Nationals in Hamilton, where the team finished 8th overall.

Sam Renton was captain of the team and performed very well coming away with Certificate of Credit, finishing in the top 25% of players in the Champion Trophy, Sam also a three queens badge for gaining three queens in a single game.

Nick Schommer was also awarded a certificate for the Biggest upset Prize for beating a much higher-rated oppent.

Cross Country

Congratulation to Ethan Smolej who finished 4th in the Under 14 National Cross Country, Andres Hernandez came second in the Junior boys at the Nationals and Nick Moulai came 3rd in the Senior Boys at the Nationals.

Big thank you to Mr Gamblin and Mr Petitt who put hours and hours into running and training with the boys.

Nick also won the Canterbury School Sports Road Race and Cross Country, can he please come forward to receive his certificate and Champion Badges.

Golf 

James Metzger is a member of the Clearwater Golf Club and plays in the Woodward Cup, he is member of the Canterbury under 19 team.

He is a member of the St Bede's College Golf team who won the B grade section of Canterbury School Sport Championships

Small Bore shooting

Is held at the Rangiora Gun Club every Wednesday and we are very grateful to Mr Kershaw who takes the boys every Wednesday and trains them up. A team of three were selected to Attend the Nationals in Palmerston North during the October. The team lead by Sam Kershaw, Mac Williams and Nick O’Connor shot very well and finished 7 out of 32 teams.

Sam was named in the South Island Small Bore shooting team.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Congratulations to Henry Burrell, Andy Dalkie, Thomas Weston and Jackson Gavin who were placed 1st in the Canterbury School sport boys snowboard team, Jackson was also placed 2nd in the boys individual Snowboard Race. They are also awarded a Canterbury School Sport Champion Badge.

South Island Champs Willem Wylaars, Angus Parkyn, Matthew Bond and Louis Wylaars competed and were placed 1st in the Slopestyle event – could the team please come forward to receive them.

Zonta Secondary School Sports Awards

Isaac Dunn was nominated in category 2, ”For Contribution to administration” and Alexy Vitry Audibert was nominated in category 4, “Most outstanding individual achievement by a young sportsman” Alexy got down to the last 26 but did not make it past the 15 finalists. Isaac went on to get highly commended in his category - Isaac has represented New Zealand in Karate and competed with and achieved many national and international titles including 2nd in the Commonwealth Karate Championships 2013 Montreal, Canada (for kumite – karate fighting), two Oceania championship titles in Sydney, Australia (3rd in 2012) and Suva, Fiji (3rd in 2014). He is a member of the Kofukan Karate Club and singled-handily raised $3000 for new club competition mats to train on. He moved away from competing due to injury, and moved towards refereeing, coaching and training New Zealand team members for Oceania and Commonwealth students. He holds a senior 1st Dan Black belt, a Senpai ranking (one rank below Sensei or main teacher),and he is a regional judge who has refereed at club and national tournaments.

Once the Gym extensions are complete, there will be a Sports Trophy cabinet in the foyer with all Summer and Winter Trophies that will have a plaque on them with the student that been awarded that trophy with him name on it, so we look forward to seeing that.

Sport would not be possible at the College without Staff help and I know all the boys appreciate the time and effort all staff put into sport.
