Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori- learn your Pepeha!

Mr George Berry —

In the lead up to Maori Language Week (beginning September 14), we have another fun and insightful exercise for you to work through, your Pepeha (a way of introducing yourself in Māori).

'Whanaungatanga' is this years theme for  Māori Language Week, which translates to not only connections and relationships between people and communities, but also about our relationship to our culture and the whenua (land).

Learning and having understanding of your own Pepeha helps to identify these connections by naming where we identify as our home and the historical sites that we connect with in New Zealand.

In Maori culture, we identify this connection between us by knowing who your people are and where they are from. This is so we can identify common ground that we may share together (e.g. people we may know, places we may have lived or relatives we may have in common).

Here is a link to a website that helps you put together your Pepeha and also lets you save, print or share it to your device so it is handy when you want to use it.
