EASY SPORTS READS…

Chrissie Walker —

Hello all… sports novels and biographies are really popular at the library, and today I thought I’d feature a bunch of sports books that are very easy reads.

These would be great choices if reading can be challenging, or if you simply want a quick and straightforward book that you can race through. All of these can be borrowed from the library.

  • Reading All Stars series (David Riley): This sports biography series has been written for people who need support with reading. They are written in simple language with lots of visuals and are around 40 pages long. Featured stars include Steven Adams, Stephen Curry, Winston Reid and Joseph Parker.
  • Reading Warrior series (David Riley): This series is a step up from the All Stars series, but have a similar format. More text but still lots of visuals, this series includes biographies on Sonny Bill Williams, Benji Marshall, Steven Adams and Kieran Reid.
  • Luca Caioli sports biography series: This series focusing on football stars has been really popular. They are much shorter than the average sports biography, but they are still around 200 pages. Featured stars include Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe and Salah.
  • The Pick Up Game: This is a compilation of short stories all about basketball – easy to pick it up and read one story at a time, then come back to it later.
  • Goal (Robert Rigby): This fairly short novel has also been made into a movie, and features illustrations from the film.
  • Rugby Spirit series: A short and easy to read series focusing on a boy learning rugby at a new school.
  • Shooting Star (Martin Waddell): A short novel about the rise and fall of a footballer.
  • Mike Lupica sports novels: This author writes novels that are simply written and not too long – try Heat (Baseball), Million Dollar Throw (Football), True Legend or Fast Break (Basketball).
  • Paul Volponi sports novels: Engaging, fairly short novels that mainly focus on basketball or baseball. Try The Final Four, Black or White or Game Seven.
  • Diary of a… series (Shamini Flint): Very short, fully illustrated series (think Diary of a Wimpy Kid) with simple language – ideal for readers who need support.
  • Full Impact (Suzanne Weyn): A very short, 100 page novel about two football team stars at a high school.
