Athletics Update

Mr John Gamblin —

Recently a number of our athletes competed with distinction at the Jennian Homes New Zealand Track and Field Championships at Nga Puna Wai.

Congratulations to them all an especially our New Zealand medalists. John Gerber came within 0.26s of Anthony Gill’s 1979 College record of 48.4s in running 48.66s. This bodes well for him breaking the record in Wellington in December at the Secondary Schools Nationals where he will next run this event wearing a College singlet.

  • U/20 100m - 5th (10.99s)

Last weekend several of our athletes competed with distinction at the Canterbury Children’s Championships.

The attached photo shows Max Hammett (left) and Bronson Rueben competing in the hurdles event. They then had to return on Tuesday to qualify for Saturday’s Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships.

Jyvhen Duel competed in the Para finals with wins in the 400m and shot put where he broke the record with a put of 8.06m. He also picked up a second in the discus.

Forty seven athletes have qualified for finals at Canterbury Champs. These are being held at the new Nga Puna Wai track in Wigram.

You are most welcome to come and watch the events, entry is free and we are based on the embankment past the finish line. See attached documents for a list of competitors and their event times and a list of competitors sorted by starting time.

Next weekend the Athletic Team will travel to Nelson for the South Island Championships.
