A word from Matt

Matt Ioane —

Our S.B.C.O.B.A. President..

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a joyful and blessed Easter. I certainly did — though mine came with a side of stage lights and a microphone. Just before Easter, I found myself in a singing showcase with my daughter. Now, let’s be clear: she was the star. I was, quite literally, the backup singer. Minimal solos, no glory — just standing off to the side, trying not to mess up the harmony or steal the spotlight (not that there was any risk of that!). But I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It reminded me of something simple but important: sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is show up for someone else. Whether it’s in family, friendship, or community — being there, even in the background, matters. That’s what this Association is about too. It’s not always about big gestures; it’s about connection, support, and showing up in ways that count. With my daughter and I - we created some memories that will last forever.

Speaking of meaningful moments, this month’s edition is full of them. We mark ANZAC Day acknowledging our annual Roll of Honour, moving imagery from the Cross Laying Ceremony, and a reflection on the Donohue twins - Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. We also celebrate the outstanding achievements of George McInnes (2000–2004), whose bravery during the Canterbury floods earned him a King’s Service Honour in 2023.   Looking ahead, our After 5 Events return in May, with gatherings in Perth on the 21st and Auckland on the 28th (following the First XV match against St Peter’s). If you're nearby, come along — they’re relaxed, welcoming occasions, and a great way to reconnect with the Bedean spirit.

I would like to make mention of the 2025 Annual Appeal that you will also have received this week. This year, we seek your support for several key initiatives: the Foundation Endowment Fund, the Science & Technology Precinct, the "Bede’s Story" heritage project, and the newly launched Champions Programme — a long-term vision for nurturing future generations of Bedeans. If you are able, your contribution will have a meaningful impact.

Whether you're singing lead or harmony this month, I hope you find joy in where you are, pride in where you’ve come from, and purpose in where you're going.

Warm regards,

Matt
