Year 13 My Future Self Day

Jan Kershaw —

This exciting day was held on the 17th of March. The students heard from our guest speaker Bella Taylor who spoke about her career plans, which lead her into the New Zealand Army, where she has served for 3 years while completing a degree in psychology at the University of Canterbury. The wonderful team from Zestpeople, ran four workshops for the boys, which included personality testing, interviewing skills, the importance of networking and putting their best foot forward. This prepared the boys well for the afternoon event of Speed Dating.

This year's Speed Dating Event was the biggest we have run yet, with 47 guests from a variety of different career and training backgrounds. They talked to the students about the career possibilities and future prospects in their specific fields. This gave our students a wonderful opportunity to talk face to face with real people in the job and find out the pros and cons of the career, training options available and how to future proof their chances of employment. It is hoped that this day has assisted our Year 13 students in defining their career choice and start to prepare them for the Industry Days coming up in August, where they will be ask to go out to a chosen career for two days, to get a feel for the job and start their networking potential.

If you wish to be involved in coming into school to talk to our students about your work/career, please contact school and let us know. We try to give our students as much exposure to as many different careers as we possibly can.

Kind regards,

Jan Kershaw
