Canterbury Cross Country Champs

Mr John Gamblin —

A quick report back from Tuesday's Canterbury Cross Country Champs at QEII

Ethan Smoley finished a well paced second in the Year 9 boys event over 3km.

Ronan Bigelow was next home in 14th place.

Andres Hernandez completed the junior boys Road and Cross Country double with another dominant win over the 3km course. He was pushed all the way by Dion Houston of Christs College, ending up with a seven second winning margin.

Nick Moulai also completed the Senior Road and Cross Country double, winning his 4km race by five seconds from Conor Melton of Cashmere High School. The third placed runner was a distant seventy seconds back. Connor High ran another strong race to finish ninth, Cameron Jopson was 14th and Bradley Jervis, running up a grade, was a worthy 16th.

Unfortunately, these four Senior Boys could not repeat the Road Race four-man team win, with Christchurch Boys High taking the title with 22 points to our 40 points for second.

On Saturday, the 17th of June, the Cross Country team will compete in the New Zealand Champs at QE2 and we wish them all good luck.

The following day, Ethan, Andres and Nick will be members of the Canterbury Regional Teams in the five x 2km cross country relays, and Canterbury will be favourites to repeat the domination of last year’s event in Rotorua.
